Arts & Sciences

The Arts & Sciences Division saw record participation in its study abroad program, welcomed its first Director of Engineering, and expanded course offerings in Astronomy and Biology Field Study. Faculty and students engaged in impactful community and research initiatives, including a collaboration with UNCW on the Community College Undergraduate Research Experience (CCURE) and participation in the North Carolina Science Festival.

2024 Highlights

• Held Fall and Spring roadside cleanups for community service through the Science Club.

• Hosted nearly 100 Brunswick County 7th graders for NC SciFest hands-on activities.

• Welcomed guest lecturers Dr. Michael Tift, Assistant Professor in the UNCW Department of Biology and Marine Biology, and Dr. Kimberly Kenyon, Head Conservator for the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources – Queen Anne’s Revenge Project, Office of State Archaeology. • Hosted Anthony Benson of the Black Sails Pirate Adventure Company for Heather Crisco’s ANT-220 Cultural Anthropology course. • Organized a field trip for BCC STEM students to the Duke Energy Brunswick Nuclear Plant Energy Education Center.

• Introduced new course offerings in Astronomy and Biology Field Study.

• Awarded grants to several Arts & Sciences faculty to globalize their courses through UNC World View.

• Hired BCC’s first Director of Engineering, Dr. Ed Naessens.

• Participated in the North Brunswick High School Career/College Event.

• Collaborated with UNCW for the third year of the Community College Undergraduate Research Experience (CCURE).

• Organized a field trip with CCURE to the Beaufort NC Maritime Museum.
