Bible Teaching Opening up the Word of God
Are We Ashamed Of the Gospel of Christ?
By Rev. Christopher B. Cain February 2025 “For I am

This may seem harsh, but I want to ask bluntly if the American Church has become
Perhaps we live as one who has not been a recipient of that trans- formation in Christ. What is it that we have clung so violently to that we would know the truth but fail to live up to what we say we believe about it?

I realize this is the Bible commentary sec- tion of the newspaper, but I do not want to pre- sume that everyone reading is at the same place in their spiritual walk with Christ. I would not be surprised if some non-believers read this section as well; in fact I hope they do and I pray this paper will plant and water seeds of faith in
Are we ashamed of the Gospel of Christ because we know if we truly yield to it, we must reject our- selves, and the secret sins which hold us cap- tive to a world that is lost and deceived in the darkness of this present age? We cannot be yoked to the world and to Christ! Romans chapter one is a fascinating passage. It makes it clear that none of us has an excuse for
ashamed of the Gospel. When I use the term the “American church,” I mean the culture of Christianity that we have dis- tilled down to that which is palatable to the average non-believer. In America today, we
not believing in God. In fact we see what is theologically referred to as “general revela- tion” in Romans 1, which is how God speaks to all people at all times. General revelation is sufficient to reveal to all men everywhere that there is a God. “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the cre- ation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1:19-21 ESV). Paul was not ashamed of the Gospel be- cause he knew the liberation and freedom that the Gospel brought from the bondage of sin and death. The Gospel has the same power to free the gentile from the idolatry of the pagan world as it does to set the Jew free from the law. I am not ashamed to say that I believe — that Christ was the Son of God who came two-thousand years ago, being fully God and fully man, and that He lived a sinless life and died on the cross of Calvary for our sins. He rose from the dead that we might have new life and become sons and daugh- ters of God through Christ Jesus by grace through faith in Christ alone. As Paul said, “So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.” (Ro- mans 1:15 ESV). I too am eager an unashamed to preach the Gospel of Christ, are you? the hearts of all of our readers. I feel com- pelled to tackle subjects that call us to be truthful with ourselves about where we are in our Christian walk, and often about where our Nation is spiritually.
are busy exporting a cheap and unbiblical prosperity gospel of health and welfare, of greed and licentiousness. I am going to suggest that we have compromised the truth of the Gospel out of a fear of man, when we should be fearing God Almighty. It is my belief that if the preaching of the Gospel is done in truth and in love and offense occurs, that offense is most likely conviction. I recognize the Gospel we preach is offensive to those who openly reject God. The Bible speaks in many places of mankind being at en- mity with God. Enmity is war- fare, so it is no surprise that the truth of the Gospel will bring of- fensive reactions among those who openly wage war in the darkness of their hearts against the true Light of God, Jesus Christ who came into this world to save lost sinners like myself. I believe we have witnessed the moral decay and subsequent free fall of our Nation for two reasons: our love of sin, and a Gospel we are ashamed of. Maybe it is our love for sin that makes us ashamed of the Gospel because we know our behavior is not in line with the power of the Gospel to radically and dramati-
