‘I don’t think you need to be a master artist to enjoy making and creating’ Lisa Burke

Like most people, Covid lockdown made me feel stir crazy, so whenever I logged off from work I would reach for my trusty art supplies to help completely switch off. I studied art and graphic design as well as stained glass in college and I’ve just never lost the need to be creative or keep learning how to work in different mediums or using new techniques. I was halfway through a life drawing course in the Hugh Lane Gallery when lockdown came into effect, so I’m looking forward to things opening back up and getting back into new classes.

For portraits I usually work from pictures, mostly because it’s really difficult to persuade people to sit still long enough, mainly using watercolours, acrylics, graphite and charcoal (I haven’t got the patience for oil paints). I don’t think you need to be a master artist to enjoy making and creating, experimenting with whatever medium you choose, and there is no end to the benefits for your mental health – I’d recommend to anyone to give it a go!
