No City Compares to Sacramento After 13 Years, I’m Here to Stay!
Have you ever been on a blind date? If you have, you know how I felt when I moved from Wisconsin to Sacramento for law school 13 years ago. I flew across the country blind, with excitement and anxiety churning in my stomach. I knew almost nothing about the city. In fact, I’d never even visited California before! Fortunately, my gamble paid off. I felt at home almost from the moment I stepped off the plane. Everyone I passed on the sidewalk was friendly, and lush trees grew on every street, just like they did at home. After graduating from law school, I knew I wanted to settle down in Sacramento for good.
Lucero and I have made dozens of wonderful memories at Kings games over the years. In particular, I’ll never forget the moment I walked onto the court with the giant American flag in my hands for the national anthem. The event was arranged for Hispanic Heritage Month by Young Latinas Aspire, which is Lucero’s non- profit, in partnership with the Kings. I was so proud to be there with the team! When the crowd cheered, it felt like the whole city was embracing me. I’ve never been happier to be a Kings fan and Sacramento resident. To this day, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Sacramento is my home; it’s the place where I started my career, founded my law firm, and met my wife. Now, we’re raising our son in the same community where we fell in love. What could be better than that?
In the years since I took that first flight, I’ve come to truly appreciate my new hometown. It has all of the amenities of a big city like San Francisco or Los Angeles — including dozens of amazing restaurants — but life

feels slower here. There’s a real sense of community, too. I never feel lost in the crowd, even when Lucero and I attend a festival or show up at a Kings game with thousands of other people. Rooting for the Kings is definitely a perk of Sacramento living for me. I’ve always enjoyed live sports. Growing up, I was a Milwaukee Bucks fan, but I also enjoyed cheering for the Chicago Bulls and my all-time favorite player, Michael Jordan. I thought I had all my favorite teams in all my favorite sports locked down for good — until I moved to Sacramento.
I’m looking forward to many more years of happiness here. From one California “local” to another, happy New Year!

Get Organized! Tips for Storing Important Documents
There’s a hidden city beneath Sacramento! Most people know about the Catacombs of Paris, but far fewer are aware of the second, secret city of “Old Sacramento” hidden beneath its business district. According to the California Department of Parks and Recreation, Old Sacramento used to be at surface level. However, flooding from the Sacramento and American rivers regularly submerged the city in the mid-1800s, causing enormous damage and loss of life. To fight back, locals rerouted one of the rivers, built levees to protect themselves from the water, and even “physically rais[ed] the streets of its business district over 20 feet above the floodplain.” They buried sections of Old Sacramento in the process! Today, you can tour the lost city through the Sacramento History Museum. There are kid-friendly tours for the whole family, or you can book an adults-only tour called Underground After Hours which “delves into the salacious and seedy side of Sacramento’s history” including murders, bootlegging, and other illegal activities of the gold rush era. Nobody enjoys disorganization. If you think you don’t mind it, just imagine a grocery store with unlabeled aisles and items randomly sorted onto the shelves. Doesn’t that make you shudder? If so, you’d be even more alarmed by the mess that would ensue if you died without organizing your important estate and financial planning information. An estate plan is a great start to getting your affairs in order, but you should also centralize necessary information and assets in an accessible yet secure location. This is imperative for business planning and business succession. So, what might it look like? ORGANIZE AND LOCK PHYSICAL DOCUMENTS IN A SAFE PLACE Keep physical copies of things like your W-2s, tax returns, marriage certificates, deeds to real property, and similar items together in an organized and secure location. This could be a locked safe, a vault, or in the hands of a trusted professional. Bonus point: Make copies of these original documents and keep them in a separate location. This protects you should something go wrong and the documents become inaccessible or destroyed. CONSIDER A DIGITAL VAULT A digital vault serves the same purpose as a safe for physical documents, but it stores digital assets and passwords (including your phone password!). We all have trouble remembering passwords, so it’s unreasonable to count on our heirs to crack those codes. Keep digital copies of your physical documents in your digital vault as well as details on what digital assets you hold, like photos, audio/ visual content, e-books, social media accounts, intellectual property designations, cryptocurrency, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and more. When it comes to crypto and NFTs, it’s imperative your vault indicates how to access those items. Without the keys, those assets will be lost forever on the blockchain. How To Get the Employee Retention Tax Credit An Easy Guide for Business Owners
In March 2020, Congress created the Employee Retention Tax Credit to reward small businesses for keeping their employees on the payroll during COVID-19. This had a twofold impact: It allowed businesses to continue operating and employees to continue collecting paychecks. Unfortunately, the tax credit expired in 2021, but you may still be able to take advantage of it. You may be one of the business owners who can amend their tax returns for 2020 and/or 2021 and get credit for keeping employees on board. WHO QUALIFIES? If you own a private business or nonprofit that was operating in 2020/2021, you might be eligible if:

Gross receipts for a single quarter in 2021 fell by 20% from the same quarter in 2019 or 2020
which of your employees count towards the credit. All employees count for businesses with 100 or fewer full-time employees. Businesses with more than 100 employees can only count employees who are full-time and were paid while not working due to shutdowns or a reduction in revenue. HOW MUCH IS THE CREDIT WORTH? If your organization qualifies for the credit in 2021, you can receive a credit of up to $7,000 per employee (70% of qualified wages up to $10,000) per quarter for each quarter (up to $28,000 for the year per employee). If your organization qualifies for the credit in 2020, you can receive a credit of up to $5,000 for each eligible employee (50% of qualified wages up to $10,000) in 2020 as a whole. You can claim this credit on each eligible quarter on Form 941, unless you already claimed the Work Opportunity Tax Credit or the employer credit for FMLA during that period. Businesses that took out PPP loans also cannot claim the retention credit for the same wages unless there’s excess from what’s covered by PPP.

Ingredients • 1 tbsp unsalted butter • 2 1/2 lbs Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved • 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced • 4 oz cream cheese, cubed • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
• 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese • 2 tbsp heavy cream • 1/8 tsp freshly grated nutmeg

Directions 1. Coat the inside of a 3–5-quart slow cooker with butter. Add Brussels sprouts, garlic, cream cheese, salt, and pepper. Toss to combine. 2. Cover and cook on LOW until the Brussels sprouts are tender, 2–3 hours. 3. Turn the slow cooker off or to the “warm” setting. Stir in the Parmesan cheese, cream, and nutmeg until the cheeses melt and the Brussels sprouts are coated in a creamy sauce. Season with more pepper to taste.

Want a Balanced Diet? Eat Dark Leafy Greens!
After a long day of work, sometimes we want nothing more than to come home and relax, unburdened by the worry of whether or not our dinner is healthy. Unfortunately, these days add up, and the longer these unhealthy meals continue, the worse it can be for you. So how can you still eat a balanced diet even when you’re exhausted or busy? The answer is to add dark leafy greens to your diet. While any vegetable is better than a burger or a cookie, darker greens — like spinach, kale, bok choy, and mustard greens — provide many impressive health benefits. Because of their rich color, these greens have higher folate levels, a B vitamin responsible for promoting heart health and preventing cancer.
Along with B vitamins, dark leafy greens have tons of vitamin K. This protects bones from osteoporosis and helps the body fight against inflammatory diseases. Their abundant antioxidants fight free radicals that can damage our cells and contain very low cholesterol levels. To top it off, they have minimal carbs and sodium too. INCORPORATING MORE DARK GREENS INTO YOUR DIET Unlike some people might think, you don’t need to eat a kale salad every night or Popeye your way through a can of spinach to consume a healthy amount of greens. Even if you’re in a rush, there are many simple ways to sneak some dark greens into your meals.
