The very latest in kitchens

Ingredients aren’t the only things that are being mixed in kitchens these days. This year, styles and materials are also being mixed to create a delicious new trend. Indeed, the variety of materials in kitchens is multi- plying, and now you can have fun combining laminates, plain surfaces, lacquers, and lots of colour. What’s more, beautiful finishes are now the name of the game, allowing you to structure the visual dimensions of the room by amalgamating matte and gloss to your heart’s desire. The key to turning this functional room into a comfy focal point is to optimize space. Tailor-made storage, which targets specific needs, should be added to existing storage spaces and kitchen cabinets.

EMERGING TRENDS IN THE KITCHEN • restaurant-style kitchens with oversized islands and trendy stools • discreet cupboard handles or no handles at all, in favour of cabinet doors that open with a simple push of the finger • a vintage look with quaint wooden lunch counters, school benches, and pendant lights from yesteryear • a timeless elegant look achieved with black accessories and features • metal decorative elements that transform the kitchen into a sparkling gem These days, the kitchen is an important gathering place for family and friends. Cocooning is a thing of the past; now every- one is into hiving. Home entertaining and great food is on the menu, especially in state- of-the-art kitchens.

The kitchen is a functional living space that is also deliciously inviting.

Richly textured solid wood flooring

Nothing can beat that good old classic for cov- ering your floors: solid wood. Its attractive and distinctive finish provides a warm atmosphere and creates a pleasant living environment. Although this type of flooring can be made from hardwood (oak, maple, ash, birch, beech), softwood (pine and larch) is popular in old houses and is more affordable. You can also opt for exotic solid wood flooring,

including jatoba, sapele, cabreuva, sucu- pira, tigerwood, walnut, or cherry. These woods are richly coloured and have distinc- tive textures and grains. Solid wood floors can be dyed to match your decor and coated with linseed or tung oil. Polyurethane gloss, satin, or matt varnish can also be used. This type of flooring is usually tongue and groove and is installed on a ply- wood floor that is level, clean, smooth, and

structurally sound. Warning! Solid wood floors should never be installed over a radiant heating system, as there is a risk of damage. Solid wood flooring comes in a broad range of quality and characteristics. The more affordable lower grades have more knots, while the higher grades are almost knot-free. Light colours visually enlarge a room, while dark colours make open spaces feel cozier. Keep in mind, also, that while dark shades create a rich calm- ing effect, dust and dirt are much more visible. What- ever sort you choose, any good quality flooring will withstand the test of time with grace and elegance if it is properly installed and well maintained.
