Message from the Chief Nursing Officer Dear Nurses and Colleagues,
Most recently I attended the American Organization of Nurse Leaders' conference in New Orleans. Among the many speakers, we had the pleasure of hearing from Jorge Quinones, an ABC News Correspondent. Jorge is well known for his show, "What Would You Do?" His words of wisdom spoke to the many facets we wish to see happen as nurses and colleagues and how we must work together for the better. Below are a few paraphrased quotes from his message and how I have let them resonate with me through positivity. I hope you can find positivity too with your interpretations. “Nurses have been part of the many scientific breakthroughs and technological advancements in
healthcare and will continue to be pivotal agents in this movement.” I say, " Let us step into our shoes and walk the pavement as care giver pioneers, engineers and greatness. Know we may fail, but that it is okay. We gave it a try and we will try again. Let's change our narrative to yes we can.” "For 22 years, nurses have been voted in the Gallup survey as the most trusted profession.” I say, "Let us continue our quest for safe quality care for all, because truthfully we are part of all in the group identified." "Let us hold up a mirror to show what is right or what we can do. Say to yourself, What will I, You, We do when no one is watching? How will we manage such an opportunity to do right on what's wrong? Remember, silence is compliancy.” I say, "let us continue to move forward with advocacy, serving our mission and our vision for equitable, just healthcare across the continuum. Listen to the voice inside you and appreciate the value of your mind and heart asking you what you will do to thrive, do better, make it right.” "Let us pull ourselves upwards by our bootstraps, because we know truthfully now that when we need to pull together, we do, we pitch in to what matters in our hearts.” I say, "Together we are better. Find you, your hero, your opportunity and always treat each other with the fundamental value of respect, no matter the personal view. Do your best to stay above the line." "Admire the beauty of the butterfly. Remember the butterfly gives us lessons of life and shows us the many changes we must go through to become beautiful.” I say, " Change, while uncomfortable, brings us far and beyond what we could have imagined."
"
I express my gratitude to all of you for all that you have done and all you will continue to do.
Thank you
Judi Cullinane, PhD, MSN, RN

Our History First planned in 1967 by Josiah Spaulding and a group of other civic leaders to address the critical rehabilitation need created by changes to Medicare law, the current Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital opened its doors on September 16, 1970. Forty years later, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital has grown into one of the top rehabilitation facilities in the world as a leader in teaching, research, and care in the rehabilitation field. SCC Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod (SCC) is a 60-bed, acute rehabilitation hospital located in Sandwich, Massachusetts that serves both Cape Cod and the Islands. SCC is the only provider of hospital-level rehabilitation on Cape Cod. The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Cape and Islands (RHCI) admitted their first patient in October 1995. In 2010, RHCI became Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod and became fully integrated into the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network. SHC The hospital was founded in 1895 by the Sisters of Charity of Montreal (the Grey Nuns) as the Holy Ghost Hospital for Incurables. A 24-bed “cottage”, the hospital served people with chronic illnesses and disabilities aiming to carry out the vision of the order’s foundress St. Marguerite d’Youville to serve all regardless of background. Over time, the facility grew to become Youville Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, a 305-bed care facility serving elders and those in need of rehabilitation. The name changed in 1970 and the facility operated as a member of the Covenant Health Systems. In 2001. Youville Hospital formed a joint venture with Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, and in 2009 Spaulding purchased Youville and changed the hospital’s name to Spaulding Hospital Cambridge. SRB Spaulding Nursing and Therapy Center in Brighton opened its doors and welcomed its first patients on Saturday October 28 th , 2017. The Spaulding Nursing and Therapy Center Brighton combined 2 former locations – one in the North End and the other West Roxbury. (SRB) is located at 100 North Beacon Street and is a fully licensed 123-bed skilled nursing facility for residents requiring skilled nursing services and short-term rehabilitation care. SRB staff provide interim nursing care from hospitalization to home. Services offered include complex wound care, intravenous antibiotic or fluid therapy, osmotic care and teaching, tube-feeding care and teaching, post-cardiac surgery care, aggressive pain management, therapy for chronic respiratory conditions, tracheotomy care, diabetic care and more.
SRH
Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital was founded in 1971 as the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Hospital. It was named after Josiah Spaulding, a founder, after his death in 1983. The former location was in the West End of Boston, located behind North Station at 125 Nashua Street.

New Knowledge
Spaulding Charlestown Nurses on the 4 th Floor realized that it was taking an average of 12 minutes to locate supplies in the clean utility room - leading to extended wait times for patients. Using the CLIP process, they created a process for "color coding" items in the clean utility room according to frequency of use, area of use and discipline. They created a guide for the new process. Through this project, they were able to reduce the time spent in the clean utility room hunting for supplies from 12 to 7 minutes.
Spaulding Cambridge Samantha O’Neill RN, BSN, OCN developed an educational program using simulation in chemotherapy administration with a goal of increasing administrative confidence. She has presented her work both locally and nationally.
Spaulding Cape Cod Keturah Peters BSN, RN, as a member of the Wampanoag Tribe, is working on a project to bring cultural awareness and competence to the nurses at Spaulding Cape Cod. The Wampanoag are a Native American people of the Northeastern Woodlands currently based in southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod.
Spaulding Brighton At Spaulding Brighton, in collaboration with the medical providers, the nurses launched the EKG Patch Solution. This is a medical procedure that allows a 12-lead, rapid EKG to be administered anywhere. Nurse Director, Bridget Blake MSN, RN is teaching her colleagues how to use the device.
Ambulatory Services Kazumi Walton BSN, RN’s role as a nurse specializing in cryoneurolysis, alongside Dr. Rovito, showcases the intersection of innovation and patient care. Her skills in communication and empathy are invaluable in a field where patients may feel anxious or uncertain about novel treatments. By proactively educating, Kazumi not only enhances their understanding of the procedure but also fosters trust and confidence in the healthcare team. This personalized approach not only improves the patient experience but also contributes to better outcomes by ensuring patients feel informed and supported throughout their treatment .
