Our History First planned in 1967 by Josiah Spaulding and a group of other civic leaders to address the critical rehabilitation need created by changes to Medicare law, the current Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital opened its doors on September 16, 1970. Forty years later, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital has grown into one of the top rehabilitation facilities in the world as a leader in teaching, research, and care in the rehabilitation field. SCC Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod (SCC) is a 60-bed, acute rehabilitation hospital located in Sandwich, Massachusetts that serves both Cape Cod and the Islands. SCC is the only provider of hospital-level rehabilitation on Cape Cod. The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Cape and Islands (RHCI) admitted their first patient in October 1995. In 2010, RHCI became Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod and became fully integrated into the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network. SHC The hospital was founded in 1895 by the Sisters of Charity of Montreal (the Grey Nuns) as the Holy Ghost Hospital for Incurables. A 24-bed “cottage”, the hospital served people with chronic illnesses and disabilities aiming to carry out the vision of the order’s foundress St. Marguerite d’Youville to serve all regardless of background. Over time, the facility grew to become Youville Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, a 305-bed care facility serving elders and those in need of rehabilitation. The name changed in 1970 and the facility operated as a member of the Covenant Health Systems. In 2001. Youville Hospital formed a joint venture with Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, and in 2009 Spaulding purchased Youville and changed the hospital’s name to Spaulding Hospital Cambridge. SRB Spaulding Nursing and Therapy Center in Brighton opened its doors and welcomed its first patients on Saturday October 28 th , 2017. The Spaulding Nursing and Therapy Center Brighton combined 2 former locations – one in the North End and the other West Roxbury. (SRB) is located at 100 North Beacon Street and is a fully licensed 123-bed skilled nursing facility for residents requiring skilled nursing services and short-term rehabilitation care. SRB staff provide interim nursing care from hospitalization to home. Services offered include complex wound care, intravenous antibiotic or fluid therapy, osmotic care and teaching, tube-feeding care and teaching, post-cardiac surgery care, aggressive pain management, therapy for chronic respiratory conditions, tracheotomy care, diabetic care and more.

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital was founded in 1971 as the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Hospital. It was named after Josiah Spaulding, a founder, after his death in 1983. The former location was in the West End of Boston, located behind North Station at 125 Nashua Street.
