DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS

Race Duval County is significantly more racially diverse than St. Johns County, which is mostly white. West of St. Augustine, near the King Street and SR312 station areas, is the most diverse part of St. Johns County. As of 2020, parts of central Duval County have a majority non-white population, including areas around Downtown Jacksonville. The southern Duval stations are in an area that has become more racially diverse over the past 10 years, with more census tracts where 50 to 75% of the population is non-white in 2020 than 2010.

Duval County’s population has been growing at a consistent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 1% from 2000 to 2020, approaching 1 million people in 2020. St. Johns County’s population remains smaller, near 300,000 in 2020, but has grown faster than Duval over the past twenty years. Growth was faster at the beginning, with a 3.9% CAGR from 2000 to 2010, before slowing slightly to 3.5% from 2010 to 2020. The population growth across the study area has been driven by suburban areas in southern Duval County and northern St. Johns County, with population doubling in certain parts from 2010 to 2020. These areas, though populous, remain spread out; the most densely populated areas are in the cities, around Downtown Jacksonville, and St. Augustine.
