FIRST COAST COMMUTER RAIL TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT (TOD) STUDY – WORKSHOP 2 COMMENT SUMMARY
This is exciting for the City of Jacksonville and its residents. It would bring Duval County in line with large cities in the U.S. that already have this type of public transportation, which could increase tourism and improve “green” initiatives.
Can't start soon enough.
In relation to the transit aspect; Leaving space to account for future track-age addition, enough space for platforms, station expansion, etc. should be something to really consider. In relation to the real-estate; I think the grid pattern is good, however, has it been considered to do something like Miami Central Station? Or Hudson Yards? Or Millennium park? With development on top of the stat ion/tracks, in order to preserve space for future transit expansion? Bear in mind keeping the original station building. That is Key. If above is ignored and the grid is kept, fine, however 5-or-6 story buildings should not be placed on key, such prime plots of land, this is the only station of the whole system where you can totally get away with 20-30-40+ story buildings. Nimbyism is low downtown, as almost no-one lives there, nor cares, so go big or go home! Side note; As-well as not having to be burdened by building parking garages in an urban environment. That would really be thinking for the future and getting the most return on investment, with the most units and space, on the largest plot of land downtown has to offer, aside from Lot J, or the courthouse. Anything smaller or more suburban styled is just a waste of potential, valuable and limited land. In addition, I think the connectivity outlined above is fantastic, especially with the Emerald Trail network. Something to note with this Development is to have as much shade as possible, and potentially encourage/require the development to have architect ural features like awnings/overhangs/cantilevered cover/arched extensions etc. That would really separate this development and make it more of a place to be/go to. Why not connect with the Brightline system to Orlando? Plenty of people in our area would use that. SirsMs: Sprawl always supplant the natural beauty(nature) and farmland with asphalt, concrete, steel, plastics, glass, dangerous chemicals in high concentrations, noise, lights and traffic.. It breaks my heart to see what sprawl has done to the garden of Florida .. please develop ,redevelop in cities. Please for future generations for your grand children …. Don’t just see what u can get out of Florida. Live Florida it was a gift, we did not earn it
