ATTRACTORS & NEIGHBORHOOD ACCESS

SIDEWALKS

The San Marco Station Area has several regional attractors including medical uses, lodging, and public spaces. This station area is anchored in the west by Baptist Medical Center, with a number of supporting medical facilities (MD Anderson, Jacksonville Orthopedics Institute) as well as the Ronald McDonald House. Large portions of the station area overlap within the St. Johns River, and there is extensive land dedicated to parking. The northeast station area bordering the river is comprised of a number of hotels. MAJOR CORRIDORS & CONNECTIONS I-95 provides connections west to I-10 towards Tallahassee. Connections south to St. Augustine are likewise provided via I-95. The Acosta Bridge provides connections north across the St. Johns River into the central business district. Main Street provides connections north across the St. Johns River into the central business district as well. TRANSIT JTA’s Skyway follows the Acosta Bridge south into the San Marco Station Area, and parallels Mary Street. There are three Skyway Stations within the study area (Kings Avenue, Riverplace, and San Marco). Additionally, transit routes within the station area include Beach/Town Center, First Coast Flyer/Southeast BRT, Mandarin Express, Philips Highway/Baymeadows/ Avenues Mall, San Jose, and St. Augustine/ San Jose. The stops within the station area experience very low ridership. The highest transit boarding location is San Marco Boulevard at Prudential Drive with a total of 23 total boardings at the two stops. JTA local service routes within the station area include Routes 107, 1074, 8, 25, and 200. There are 13 stops within this station area with stops located along Museum Circle, Riverplace Boulevard, Palm Avenue, Children’s Way, Le Baron Avenue, and San Marco Boulevard. The highest ridership stops are located near the FCCR on San Marco Boulevard at stops 1680 and 4201. The St. Johns River Water Taxi provides private service along the St. Johns River and includes two stops. This service is predominately used during events at the sports complex which includes Vystar memorial Arena, Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, and Everbank Stadium (NFL Jacksonville Jaguars).

In this urban setting, the San Marco Station Area has a very strong sidewalk network along main thoroughfares such as San Marco Boulevard, Main Street, and Prudential Drive. All street blocks in the station area effectively features some type of pedestrian connection. Additionally, the vast majority of intersections have enhanced pedestrian crossing features such as high visibility crosswalks. BIKE LANES & REGIONAL TRAILS Additional bicycle infrastructure within this station area could better support its urban context. Main Street contains two blocks of sharrow markings. Prudential Drive has bi-directional 5-foot buffered bike lanes. San Marco Boulevard has a number of blocks of sharrow markings and connects to the Acosta Bridge’s designated bike facility. Southbank Riverwalk Park provides bike connections along the riverbank in the northeast of the station area. A shared use path (the SUP) across the St. Johns River, along the Fuller Warren Bridge, recently opened to connect pedestrian and cyclists, across the river, between Riverside and San Marco (see Figure 3-10). OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONNECTIVITY Wherever possible, additional bicycle facilities should be incorporated into the station area. This is especially important to make connections south into residential areas. The elevated highway structures form a physical barrier between locations. Enhanced pedestrian facilities as well as activation of these spaces through concepts like pocket parks, could enhance user experience. At-grade railroad crossings could also be enhanced to improve pedestrian crossing facilities.
