"We are in that planning process where we have to consider a lot of those things when you are looking at potential stations," Clark said. "Even though one might be a really good spot, if it is too constrained, we have to make sure it fits in with the community." The St. Augustine rail station could also help encourage more people to live downtown, Skinner said. "We need to encourage the mix of economic development and infield development and redevelopment of these older properties," she said. "It's an opportunity to be something creative in that location that hopefully will help the redevelopment and economic development of the West King Street area."
Building the line is still a long way off, Skinner and Clark said.
The JTA has met with St. Johns and Duval county officials, as well as the St. Augustine City Commission and the Florida East Coast Railroad. Community meetings also are planned.
"The process has begun, but this is about details at this point and we need to engage the community at large," Clark said. "This is something that all three governments and all of the citizens are really going to have to get behind and understand what we are trying to achieve and make sure they believe it is right with the community."
