ATTRACTORS & NEIGHBORHOOD ACCESS

SIDEWALKS

The Walmart/University Station Area contains attractors such as the Jacksonville Ice and Sportsplex (Community First Igloo) as well as regional retail such as Walmart. The Pine Forest Swimming Pool is located within the southwest portion of the station area. The station area is dominated by higher capacity roadways, with pockets of single family detached housing. The remaining land uses are low density commercial development along the major roadway. MAJOR CORRIDORS & CONNECTIONS The only east-west connection through the station area is Emerson Street. US 1/Philips Highway and I-95 provide southeast to northwest connection to Jacksonville to the north and St. Augustine to the south. The other roadways in the study area serve as neighborhood access. The FEC railway bisects the station area southeast to northwest, crossing Emerson Street at-grade. TRANSIT On the far western edge of the station area is St. Augustine Road, which features the St. Augustine/San Jose route with limited boardings within the station area. US 1 features the Philips Highway/Baymeadows/ Avenues Mall and First Coast Flyer/Southeast BRT routes. The northbound and southbound stops at US 1/ Philips Highway and Clinton Avenue have higher levels of boardings. The weekday average for boardings is approximately 130 passengers. Transit routes through this station area operate parallel to the FCCR railway along US 1/Philips Highway, but there are no east-west transit service routes within this station area. JTA local services within the station area include Routes 27 and 207. The highest ridership stop is Stop 1150 serving both Routes 27 and 297. The First Coast Flyer BRT Blue Line operates within the station area, as well as the St. Johns Express Select.

US 1/Philips Highway contains 5-foot sidewalks on both the northbound and southbound directions. Emerson Street has comparable sidewalk facilities to US 1/ Philips Highway. Residential areas in the western station area generally have some sidewalk connections to Emerson Street. Conversely, the eastern residential areas have a limited sidewalk network. BIKE LANES & REGIONAL TRAILS US 1/Philips Highway contains 5-foot bidirectional on- road bicycle lanes. There are no other dedicated bicycle facilities or trails within the station area. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONNECTIVITY East-west connectivity could be improved within the station area. However, that would likely create additional at-grade crossings which may not be desirable. Additionally, the extension of bicycle facilities into neighborhoods would improve multimodal access within the station area. The substantial surrounding residential neighborhoods and major regional roads could generate ridership as an origin station, which would require defined parking to access a potential commuter rail station.
