The San Carlos Station Area encompasses the northern portion of the St. Augustine Historic District. Ponce De Leon Boulevard travels alongside the FEC rail corridor through this station area, with open lands and the San Sebastian River directly to the west of the FEC rail corridor and a mix of hotels, commercial and residential uses to the east of Ponce De Leon Boulevard. There are also various cultural, education and religious institutions on the eastern most portion of the station area. The eastern half of this station area is predominantly urban and built up as well as lower density built up. The center station area connection is located where Ponce De Leon Boulevard, San Carlos Avenue, San Marco Avenue and May Street converge. Just north of San Carlos Avenue is the Davenport Park as well as the main branch of the St Johns County Public Library System. MAJOR CORRIDORS & CONNECTIONS The FEC rail corridor bisects the station area north to south, parallel to Ponce De Leon Boulevard (US 1). Ponce De Leon Boulevard and San Marco Avenue (SR A1A) are the main north-south roadway corridors within the San Carlos Station Area. San Carlos Avenue and May Street also provide east-west connectivity to the center of the station area. There is a grid network of smaller streets between Ponce De Leon Boulevard and San Marco Avenue that connect neighborhoods, commercial uses and hotels. Both Ponce De Leon and King Street experience significant congestion. Both Ponce De Leon Boulevard, San Marco Avenue and May Street all experience high levels of congestion through the station area. TRANSIT There are several north-south transit routes that travel through the station area including the Sunshine Bus Purple, Teal and Connector Routes along Ponce De Leon Boulevard. The Red Line travels north-south between San Marco Avenue. There are seven bus stops located along Ponce De Leon Boulevard. The St. Augustine Old Town Trolley has four stops within this station area, including Stop 1 at the Old Jail on San Marco Avenue, Stop 22 at Ponce De Leon’s Fountain of Youth on Magnolia Avenue, Stop 21 at the Old Senator Tree and Howard Johnson Hotel on San Marco Avenue, and Stop 20 at the Mission of Nombre de Dios on A1A.
Major corridors like Ponce De Leon Boulevard and San Marco Avenue have sidewalks on both sides of the roadway. Many of the east-west streets south of San Carlos Avenue lack sidewalk connectivity, while streets north of San Carlos Avenue have greater sidewalk connectivity. BIKE LANES & REGIONAL TRAILS There are no dedicated bike lanes or trails within the station area. San Marco Avenue to May Street is identified as a “bicycle friendly” road. The East Coast Greenway Trail is identified as an unfunded plan along San Marco Avenue. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONNECTIVITY There is ample regional and local roadway connectivity to the east of the FEC railway within this station area, as well as transit routes and stops close to the central station area. While there are north-south transit routes along Ponce De Leon Boulevard, the station area could be enhanced by east-west transit connectivity and first-mile/last-mile options, particularly to connect to services within the Historic District. There are also gaps in east-west sidewalk connectivity for pedestrians, and additional space for micromobility such as bicycles and scooters could provide greater multimodal connectivity within the station area.
