OCTOBER 2017

Dr. Kevin’s Premonitions SCARY STORIES TO READ AT THE DENTIST’S OFFICE

With Halloween fast approaching, October is the time for ghost stories. I don’t really have any ghost stories myself, but over the years, I’ve experienced strange phenomena that can only be described as premonitions. It all started after my father passed away in April 1993. My father and I were very close and had played many golf tournaments together. I always felt he was looking after me and was a good teacher of that game. The year that my father died, my brother, Michael, and I played in the annual member guest golf tournament. In that game, so many shots were nothing less than supernatural. For example, Michael and I were fighting for first place on the last day of the tournament and were behind by only one stroke. All of a sudden, on hole 14, Michael hit a spectacular drive, and I was able to make a long putt for a birdie. Following that, we birdied the last four holes of that tournament to win by one stroke! Both Michael and I knew that Pop was certainly helping us that day. Three years after Pop died, I had a really weird dream. In the dream, Mindy and I were at my mom’s house, and we were very upset about something. We’d just walked in the door when the phone started to ring. In the dream, my mom picked up the phone and said, “Oh my God, is she okay?” I tend to forget about dreams pretty quickly, but this one stuck with me so much that later in the afternoon, I told my

mom about it. That same day, my brother flew into town. We picked him up from the airport and drove back to my mom’s house. When we arrived, the phone started to ring, and my mom quickly went to answer it. The first thing out of her mouth was, “Oh my God, is she okay?” Come to find out, Aunt Theresa, my mom’s only sister, had been in a horrible car accident. The man she was in the car with, Bob St. Mary, didn’t survive the wreck. Aunt Theresa was in critical condition, but thankfully she pulled through. As Mindy and I left my mom’s home that night, it dawned on me that the call my mom received was the one I’d dreamt about! There’s been one stranger occurrence that made me believe there is something to the spiritual side of life. Some time ago, my Uncle Baldy (Pop’s brother) was in a hospital out in Boston. I happened to have a seminar in Boston, so I was able to go visit him in the hospital. We chatted for a while, and he looked to be doing pretty well. Four days later, I was back in Malone when I had another dream. In this dream, my Uncle Baldy came to see ME, just to say hello. I mentioned the dream to my wife the next morning, but didn’t think much of it after that. When I arrived at the office I received a call and learned Uncle Baldy had passed away the night before. Now, I don’t want anyone to be more afraid to go to the dentist than they already are, so you should know I haven’t had any more premonitions lately. But these stories still send goosebumps down my spine and make me realize that there is a lot more to life than what we see with our eyes. Happy Halloween!

TO MAKE WITH YOUR KIDS Simple and Creative Halloween Treats

Creating decked-out, bespoke costumes for your kids takes a lot of planning and hard work. If you want an easier way to make Halloween more creative this year, try creating some holiday-themed treats the whole family can participate in making. The results will be a lot more exciting than the standard fun-sized candy bars that you’ll have more than enough of after the holiday.

almond fingernail at the tip. If you want extra details, use a toothpick to make knuckles in the frosting.

Spooky Oreos

What you’ll need: Oreos, melting chocolate (white or bittersweet), decorations

Donut Monsters

Melt your chocolate, dip America’s favorite cookies in it, and let them set. Ta-da! You’re left with the perfect blank canvas for your children (and you!). Run wild — from spider webs and ghosts to vampires and werewolves, you’ll have a unique treat for everyone at your party.

What you’ll need: glazed or plain donuts, M&M's, plastic fangs

These monsters require only brief assembly, and the effect is awesome. Simply buy your favorite glazed donuts, or make them yourself if you’re feeling adventurous, buy some cheap plastic fangs, and decorate. You can use red food coloring for a blood effect and candy for eyes. You’re only limited by your imagination.

Follow these simple instructions (don’t be afraid to get creative!), and you’ll delight kids of all ages this year.

Witch Finger Pretzels

What you’ll need: large pretzel sticks, frosting, green and black food dye, almond slivers

To start, dye the almond slivers black to make “fingernails.” Cut the pretzel rods down to finger-length and dip them in frosting dyed the pale green of witches’ skin. While the frosting is still soft, stick an

HOW TO DO THE LEAST DAMAGE TO YOUR TEETH THIS HALLOWEEN

Oil and water. Drinking and driving. Dentists and Halloween. There are some things that do not mix. But, what if we told you that most dentists go trick-or-treating with their kids and even sneak a treat or two from their kids’ buckets? Dentists know better than anyone else how unrealistic it is to keep people from eating extra sweets during Valentine’s Day, Halloween, and Christmas. But there’s a smart way to indulge in seasonal treats without seriously damaging your teeth. First and foremost, Halloween night might be the most important night of the year to brush your teeth. That should be obvious. Now that we’ve established that, let’s look at two candies that you should partake of sparingly, or just avoid altogether: LOLLIPOPS. When it comes to how bad something is for your teeth, frequency and length of exposure is more harmful than

quantity. Theoretically, it’s better for your teeth to eat five candy bars than one sucker (it’s just not as good for your waistline). Lollipops will rest millimeters from your teeth for 10–20 minutes. GUMMY WORMS . Besides being high in sugar, these candies, and really anything sour and gummy, are among the most acidic. Foods with a high acid content wear down the enamel of your teeth, regardless of how much sugar is involved. ANYTHING STICKY . We’re looking at you, caramel. Anything you can’t eat with braces is probably too sticky for your teeth. Bit O’ Honeys and Tootsie Rolls are among the worst offenders. On the other hand, some candies are much easier on your pearly whites:

candies made with stevia or other sugar substitutes

• Candy bars with nuts

So, enjoy yourself, be deliberate about your candy, and remember that Halloween is game time for your toothbrush.

• Dark chocolate

• Sugarless gum and other sugarless

USE DIFFUSERS TO REAP THE BENEFITS OF ESSENTIAL OILS If you’ve stopped by a health store recently, you’ve no doubt seen a huge selection of essential oils. These liquids, which contain concentrated, natural aroma compounds found in plants, are the basis of aromatherapy, one of the most popular trends in holistic health. Aromatherapy involves applying these oils to the skin or spraying them into the air. Skin application requires that you use diluted oils, because aromatic compounds are strong and can cause irritation. As a result of these concerns, many essential oil acolytes have turned to diffusers to get the benefits of aromatherapy in a safe, wonderful-smelling manner. it a valuable multitasker. Heat and evaporative diffusers are cheaper options, but they tend to alter oils or separate particles according to size. Once you decide on the best diffuser for your home, you need to select a few essential oils and put your new toy to use. Lemon oil is antibacterial and antiseptic, and will freshen your environment. Cinnamon oil can clear congestion and has a homey, autumnal scent. Eucalyptus oil is an air purifier, but its scent is strong and not for everybody. If you want to de-stress, try rosemary oil, which decreases your cortisol levels.

In addition to filling your house with an all-natural, appealing perfume, aromatherapy has been touted as a way to help with everything from stress and insomnia to cognitive function and mood enhancement. To receive these benefits, you’ll need to pick up a diffuser and some oils. With so many options, though, how do you know which one is right for you? There is no shortage of methods to diffuse essential oils. Nebulizing diffusers don’t require any heat source, instead atomizing the essential oils. They are extremely effective, but they are also large and expensive. Ultrasonic diffusers are similarly heatless, preserving the oils. This type of diffuser can also work as a humidifier, making

Take note that you should alert your doctor before partaking in aromatherapy if you’re pregnant, nursing, or on any medication. While most essential oils are perfectly safe to diffuse, the compounds in certain oils can combine with medication and trigger adverse side effects. Once you begin diffusing, you’ll never go back to commercial, chemical scent sprays. The benefits are evident, and the results smell sweet.

How Farmers Grow Those Giant Pumpkins

Forklifts and cranes may be used mainly for construction work, but every fall, thousands of backyard gardeners use them as gardening tools — or rather, harvesting tools — for their largest single crop. Massive pumpkins aren’t practical, but they can become a minor tourist attraction in your hometown, and even win a few thousand bucks if they're really huge. However, with the time and effort it takes to get them that big, farmers aren’t in it for the money. They’re in it for the glory.

even good breeding. Competitive growers will often purchase the seeds of the previous year’s champions for their plant. After preparing the soil to make it extra fertile, they’ll plant the pumpkin in late winter or early spring. Before the gourd starts growing, flowers on the plant need to be pollinated. Farmers will usually take it upon themselves to pollinate, using pollen from plants with proven genetic lines. Winning pumpkins usually claim their “father” plant and “mother” seed, like racehorses. Growing a great pumpkin is practically a full-time job, with some farmers reporting spending 40 hours a week on it. Heated soil, fences to reduce wind, sand, and other specific cultivation techniques give the pumpkin a fighting chance to grow into a monster. But, in the end, there’s an element of luck. The competitive growing industry is getting bigger (pun intended). In 1979, the largest pumpkin on record was 438 pounds. Since 2008, the world record has been broken every year. The reigning heavyweight champion was grown in Germany last year, weighing in at 2,623 pounds. That’s the weight of a 2018 Toyota Yaris or 1,748 standard pumpkin pies.

Growing these monstrous fruits (yes, they are technically fruits) is kind of like breeding a racehorse. It takes practice, cultivation, and
