Hawke House In May we had the pleasure of welcoming Senator Don Farrell, Special Minister of State, Minister for Trade and Tourism of Australia, along with Mayor Liz Goossens to open our newly renovated Hawke House. Bob Hawke was a towering figure in Australian politics and the only Prime Minister born in our beautiful state of South Australia. It was our privilege to officially open 'Hawke House', the restored home of Australia's 23rd Prime Minister in Bordertown. Hawke House has been carefully renovated to preserve its significant heritage, offer accommodation for visitors, and provide a meeting space for the local community. With up to 2,000 visitors anticipated annually, it not only represents a major tourism opportunity for the region but also honors the remarkable legacy of Bob Hawke.

Material Girls Wrap-Up Thank you to everyone who visited, enjoyed, and shared items for our Material Girls exhibition. We had a blast and recorded a stunning average of 71 visitors PER DAY – not to mention, received hundreds of lovely comments and heard so many stories about our district’s women. Image by Sarah Cunningham International Art Textile Biennale 2023 17 June - 26 July 2024 International Art Textile Biennale 2023 celebrates the vibrant and evolving world of contemporary art textiles. In its second edition, this Biennale showcases a diverse array of works that push the boundaries of textile art. A testament to the profound shift underway in the perception of textile art, lies a powerful and accessible medium for exploring identity, society, and politics in the 21st century. The 35 finalists from 11 countries dismantle preconceived notions on what it means to be a textile artist and how this medium can express profound commentary. Diverse perspectives unfold in each piece, challenging inherited canons and questioning concepts such as body and beauty, isolation and community. Artists delve into fabric as architecture, unraveling notions of home and the temporal nature of interior space. Some pieces serve as diaries of concerns about the escalating impacts of climate warming, while others examine the

intrinsic nature of self-reflection, exploring the act of making as a journey of internal struggles and letting go. Playfulness and introspection dance hand in hand, where the boundaries of textile art are stretched, unraveled, and woven anew, offering viewers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of contemporary artistic expression. Traditional techniques also seamlessly intertwine with innovation. Seated beside the familiar textiles are a myriad of unconventional companions - rabbit skin, paper-pulp, concrete, flax, old woollen blankets, stringy-bark, spider egg cases, recycled plastics, foraged vines, recycled electrical copper wire, charcoal, reclaimed ceramics, fluorite, amethyst, business tie linings, doilies, and off-cuts of previous artworks.

Art you can touch!

Two of the National Gallery of Australia's Art Cases will be landing in Bordertown from 17 June - 12 July. These cases travel to schools, libraries and community centres, galleries and aged care facilities throughout Australia, where works can be discovered by adults and children. A key feature of the Art Cases program is that the works can be handled - art you can touch! We will be receiving two cases Form and Function and Bodies which are both available for your group or meeting to look and touch. If you would like to explore the National Gallery of Australia Art Cases, please call the Walkway Gallery on 08 8752 1044.
