Operating the correct Tax Code for employees

HMRC are seeing a substantial increase in calls from employees who believe their employers are not operating the correct Tax Code.

If you’re taking on a new employee, it’s important that you operate the correct tax code as soon as possible. To help you do this, you should review the guidance Notifying and getting new employee information right . Employees who can’t provide a P45 should complete a new starter declaration and be advised to wait 35 days from the start of their employment to allow HMRC to determine whether a new tax code is required. Before running your payroll, you must also check to see if any employees have been given a new tax code and operate that code at the next available pay date. This will avoid employees paying the incorrect amount of tax.
