And because they are so important the government is taking steps to secure their long term future. It is seeking views on proposals that will enable banks to process images of cheques rather than paper as they do today. That means that time spent transferring it between different banks and centres for processing, exchange and clearing is saved, as well as reducing the overall costs. In the future it could be quicker to cash a cheque than to complete a Bacs transfer. The government has published a consultation on cheque imaging and is seeking views from consumers, businesses, charities and the banking industry on how best to implement changes that will boost the status of the cheque, reinforcing their relevance in 21st century Britain. The option to respond to consultation questions is also available via LinkedIn .

HMRC online service availability issues

11 March 2014

On 13 and 17 March the Government Gateway will be unavailable for certain services.

The following information has been published on HMRC’s service issues web pages.

HMRC apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Pay As You Earn (PAYE)

Due to a scheduled upgrade, the Vendor Single Integrated Proving Service (VSIPS) will be unavailable between 09:00 and 18:00 on Thursday 13 March . The Third Party Validation Service (TPVS) will however be available for use.

Online End of Year Expenses and Benefits

Due to a scheduled upgrade you will be unable to submit your Expenses and Benefits forms (P9D, P11D & P11D(b)) between 21:00 on Monday 17 March and 00:59 on Tuesday 18 March . The Online End of Year Expenses and Benefits Service will still be available for forms to be completed however you will be unable to submit them during this period. If you want to complete a P11D(b) only or make an amendment you will be unaffected as these forms should be printed and posted to HMRC.

Due to a scheduled upgrade you will be unable to access our online service between 21:00 on Monday 17 March and 00:59 on Tuesday 18 March . If you use commercial software you will be unable to submit your returns at this time.
