Marriage for Same Sex Couples

13 December 2013

The government has announced that Marriage for Same Sex Couples will be introduced from 29 March 2014.

As set out in the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 for the purposes of survivor benefits in occupational pension schemes, the current requirements for those members in a Civil Partnership have been extended to those same sex couple in a marriage. Summary of what’s changing and when Same sex couples will be able to give notice on Thursday 13 March and marriages (following notice) can take place on Saturday 29 March. The government is working hard to ensure that couples wishing to convert their civil partnerships into marriages, and married people wanting to change their legal gender while remaining married, will be able to do so as soon as possible. They aim to do this before the end of 2014. CIPP comment You may be wondering what this change has to do with the payroll profession. There may be benefits within your company that you administer which are offered to employees’ spouses, such as healthcare. Employers will need to ensure that whatever is currently offered to married couples will need to be extended to same sex married couples to avoid any risk of discrimination in the workplace.
