contemporary, both single- and dual-sided. For those of you looking to add a fireplace to your home, we spoke to notable architects from across the U.S. to “enlighten” you on all of the options. Also in this issue, you’ll find an interview with actress Marcia Gay Harden, who shares with us her favorite things in her upstate New York home; the latest watches to wear when flying down the slopes; and recipes from top bartenders for low-alcohol cocktails perfect for any time of year. And for those who can’t handle the cold weather, snow, and a mountain lifestyle, we have something special for you, too: beach homes from Florida to Hawaii—listed for $10 million or more—with outdoor bars where you can enjoy those cocktails. We, of course, hope you enjoy this issue, whether you’re spending the winter in the mountains, on the slopes, or on the beach. ■

The combination of rarefied air, endless mountain ranges, picturesque snow caps, and the peace that comes with being far away from the bustle of big cities makes having a home in the Rocky Mountains a dream escape. Although it isn’t for everyone, some homeowners in Colorado are taking their mountain life to new heights by converting historic properties into luxury residences. For our cover story of this edition of Mansion Global Experience Luxury, we’re looking at properties that have been repurposed from ranch buildings, churches, and other historic structures into high-end, modern homes. But homes like these, as you can imagine, need special care. “It’s a privilege but also a respon- sibility to own a historic property,” Joy Adams, who owns one of these conversions in Crested Butte, Colorado, tells us. Of course, no mountain home is complete without a fireplace, for both practical and aesthetic purposes. The array of styles for your home hearth is endless, from classic to

Crested Butte used to be a funky, rundown ski town, and this house was known as a place where people could put their mattresses on the floor.” The Adamses certainly aren’t the first to reimagine a historic building in the Mountain West, where there’s been a deluge of buyers in recent years, many discovering the rustic charms of the region’s early archi- tecture. Whether the home started as the town church, a barn, or even a blacksmith’s forge, owners embrace the quirks and the history of their property, along with the attention an unusual residence attracts. St. Patrick’s Church closed in 1967, but the bell tower, stained glass, buttresses, and other features were preserved in the front part of the property, says Channing Boucher,

Joy and Paul Adams occasionally find strangers in their living room, but they are remarkably understanding. “Our house is converted from a church that was built in the late 1800s, and it has a plaque out front, so some people open the door and walk in thinking it’s still a historic church,” Joy says. “They always apologize, but if I have time, I’ll show them around. Sometimes they have a connection to the old church, such as parents or grandparents who got married here.” Joy, who retired from a career in biomedical engineering, and her husband Paul, who is retired from the petroleum industry, purchased the property in Crested Butte, Colorado, 22 years ago because they loved to vacation in the area. “Paul traveled a lot for work, so we decided we might as well live where we want,” Joy says. “This property was in a derelict state when we

couple, who reimagined Boston’s 19th-century Algonquin Club into a modern private social club, also con- verted a former blacksmith’s studio into “Mountain Forge” in downtown Aspen, Colorado. “Paul and I love the challenge of how to keep the historic elements and character of a building while bringing it up to modern standards,” says Sandy, 61, president of Hexagon Properties, a luxury real estate devel- opment firm, and founder of Quin House, the members-only club in Boston’s historic Algonquin building. Her husband, Paul Edgerley, 67, is a co-owner of the Boston Celtics and works in private equity. “What drew us to Mountain Forge is the location on a corner in the heart of Aspen, across the street from the state park and with mountain views,” Sandy says. “Skiing is steps away, but so are great restaurants and shops.” Francis Whitaker, a renowned

blacksmith who died in the 1990s, once owned the building in down- town Aspen and used it as his forge. The Edgerleys learned about the off-market property from their real estate agent and bought it in 2017. The couple converted the building into a mixed-use property that includes a residence on the upper level, commercial office on the ground floor, and entertainment space on the lower level. “We kept some of the original parts, such as wood beams and metal details, but we also took inspiration for the design from the former use by the blacksmith,” Sandy says. “We even curved the

sidewalk outside in a nod to the forge. There are modern finishes, but we also hired people with the craftsmanship to make it beautiful.” The Edgerleys’ reimagined black- smith shop is on the market again for $45 million. The next buyers may want to use the property as a vacation home, as a permanent home with a business on the premises, or as an investment with both commer- cial and residential tenants, says Carrie Wells, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Mason Morse who’s working with the Edgerleys. “The city of Aspen and the sur- rounding county have adopted some of the most arduous regulations to

The renovated 2,000-square-foot house includes three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a remodeled kitchen with a La Cornue range, soapstone counters, and a tile backsplash. “The Roadhouse was neglected and damaged, with a roof that was caving in, but when the previous owners restored it, they installed radiant heat in the ceiling and added new bathrooms,” Bullawrd says. “Before that, it was just heated with a fireplace.” The Homestead Cabin, built in 1876, is a 677-square-foot remodeled cabin with a bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen and a dining area, and a living room. Future owners can build a mansion on various parcels of land on the property if they prefer a larger home rather than multiple smaller residences, Flynn says. Whether it’s the conversion of historic ranch buildings into modern amenity spaces, transform- ing a church into an elegant home, or transitioning an iron forge into a contemporary urban space, archi- tects and owners with imagination can create unique residences for people who embrace a quirky floor plan. ■

limit building heights and to protect historic structures, so you couldn’t create this now,” Wells says. “The penthouse residential level has three bedrooms and an open kitchen, living room, and dining room,” Sandy says. “There’s a deck off the dining area with seating and a view of the park and Aspen Mountain. On the other side, off one of the bedrooms, is a deck with a view of Red Mountain and the town. There’s also a deck across the entire roof with a 360-degree view, a pool, a hot tub, and an outdoor kitchen.” The lower level has a game room, a golf simulator, and a sunken patio. REVERING AND REVITALIZING A HISTORIC RANCH One mile from the town of Basalt and 30 minutes from Aspen, the historic West Ranch is a 125-acre cattle ranch near the Rio Grande Trail and the Roaring Fork River, says Lauren Bullard, an associate broker with the Agency in Aspen. “The ranch was started by a home- steading family in the late 1800s, and the current owners continue to oper- ate the ranch,” Bullard says. “Over the years, various buildings have been converted for modern uses.” The “Hangar,” formerly an arched agricultural building with doors at each end, was used for equipment storage. “The Hangar was converted to a lounge, a conference room, and a coworking and entertaining space,” Bullard says. “It includes a game space, a pool table, and a bar and a lounge with a wood-burning fireplace. It can be used as a party barn, which would be especially fun

A Fireplace for All Seasons

From classic to contemporary and every style in between, this architectural treasure has endless possibilities

BY TRACY KALER

Simplicity was the goal when Specht Novak imagined a wood-burning fireplace lined with custom steel in a home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The result complements the house’s Southwestern yet minimalist aesthetic. “The steel surround continues across the wall and forms a niche for firewood. The hearth is a single piece of honed limestone that is cantilevered off the wall with hidden steel supports,” says Scott Specht, founding partner of the New York and Austin–based firm. “The whole assembly was a technical challenge to accomplish, but creates a minimal and elegant focal point for the room.” Not all fireplaces are this imaginative, but these architectural treasures run the gamut, from contemporary to classic, with dozens of versions in between. Wood- burning, gas, and electric, with open and raised hearths, traditional mantels, rustic brick surrounds, and sleek details, fireplaces generate physical and emotional warmth, forge design statements, and lure people inside a space. UNIQUE ITERATIONS Painted wood mantels are ubiquitous, and often, tile completes the surround. But materials like plaster, stucco, marble slabs, and stacked stone can create unique alternatives.

Architect John Ike, a partner at Ike Baker Velten in Oakland, California, said his favorite iteration is Rumford, a style with a shallow firebox and a narrow chimney, which is what he picked for a New Jersey beach house. “This family home reflects the 19th-century shingle style, with interiors to match the landscape's colors,” Ike explains. “The Rumford fireplace, with proportional firebox and chimney flue, is finished with white lime plaster inspired by Wabi Sabi,” the Japanese aesthetic

A vintage fireplace suits a modern Florida home designed by Chinotto House.

INSPIRED BY THE PAST Designers and architects often look to history, which can spawn fresh ideas. For instance, inglenook fire- places date back hundreds of years, but design pros are incorporating these classics when building new and upgrading existing homes. Jim Rill of Rill Architects in

point for the color palette in the rest of the home, and we took note of its rounded shape, so we opted for more structured pieces to add to the room for balance.” A Kelly Wearstler grass cloth, leather sofa, bouclé slipper chairs, marble plinth, and a wood snake side table complete this mid-century-inspired design.

centered on the beauty of imper- fection. In his own home in Point Loma, California, the fireplace, although simple, makes a statement with a painted-brick exterior running to the ceiling. The look comple- ments his collection of Mid-Century Modern furniture. The work of Lew French, a master stonemason recognized for his ground-breaking approach, inspired a wood-burning stone fireplace in a home in Annapolis, Maryland. “The fireplace is located within an office that is fully lined in sleek, warm custom millwork, so the cool stone wall becomes an immediate focal point and juxtaposition to the surrounding warm wood,” says Annapolis-based architect Cathy Purple Cherry, whose firm designed the home. “The stone itself is art and used to create an incredible graphic wall surrounding the fireplace.” In a home in Gainesville, Florida, local design studio Chinotto House curated a theater room around a freestanding, vintage wood-burning fireplace resting on a platform of Ocala block, a type of concrete often used in mid-century Florida houses. The funky design suits the 1962 home by architect Jack Clark. Chelsey Cox of Chinotto House suggests hunting for a showstopping vintage piece to get that look. “Let that be the focus of the design and where you draw inspiration,” she recommends. “We used the fireplace color as a jumping-off

MULTIFUNCTIONAL Beyond presenting warmth and atmosphere, some fireplaces serve other functions. Specht designed an elevated fireplace in a contem- porary Bridgehampton, New York, beach cottage, with a bench and storage beneath it and a skylight above. “This wood-burning fireplace matches its rustic surroundings with a custom surround made of plate steel and raw plywood,” he notes. In a nod to the coastal envi- rons that also ties into the fireplace, “a skylight is located where the fire- place touches the ceiling, allowing for a bit of sun to further brighten the space.” Purple Cherry Architects chose a wood-burning fireplace with a gas igniter and a limestone surround in a Centreville, Maryland, home. “Should the homeowners ever wish to not burn wood, they could use a gas flame, giving them the flexibil- ity to choose,” Purple Cherry says about the dual-fuel decision. Art was a determining factor when her team homed in on the details. “We wanted to ensure the scale and design allowed for the placement of a beautiful piece of artwork over the mantel to further draw the eye to the fireplace," she adds. DOUBLE DUTY Though most fireplaces are one- sided, double-sided designs infuse

Bethesda, Maryland, said inglenook fireplaces provide a cozy seating area to enjoy the fire. While most fireplaces invite larger groups to socialize, these offer a more intimate experience for one or two people. His firm designed a new Virginia residence but infused traditional detailing, including an inglenook fireplace modeled after the regal Mount Vernon homes outside Washington, D.C. This unex- pected jewel occupies a nook off the foyer and offers “a sense of welcom- ing,” he says of the quaint detail. Alternatively, in his own Craftsman- style home in Maryland, an inglenook fireplace is the living room ’ s cen- terpiece. In this instance, he chose fir for the woodwork, bluestone for the surround, and broken flagstone for the hearth. Shelving, a common

ambiance into separate spaces. In a contemporary home in Weston, Connecticut, Specht Novak imagined a hearth with a water-jet-cut single piece of stone for a dual-sided gas fireplace. “Usually, several pieces of stone would be used for the surround, but this technique gives a much cleaner appearance that allows the veining of the stone to read across the fireplace,” Specht says about the design. While some double-sided fireplaces face interior rooms, in this instance one is indoors, and one is outdoors, showcasing “a view through to the landscape beyond, making this light-filled space feel even more open.” WOOD, GAS, OR ELECTRIC? When deciding on a fireplace, a homeowner’s style can influence material selections and overall look, yet some choices are predetermined. Depending on the architec- ture and placement, introducing a wood or gas fireplace into an existing home can prove challenging. “There are several things to consider when adding a fireplace—building codes, location, and ventilation are top of the list,” Ike explains. “A wood-burning stove needs a pathway to the roof, which becomes difficult when adding to an older home. If you can add a fireplace to an exterior wall, then it is possible to directly vent for a gas fireplace.” Wood-burning versions are usually the most desir- able and provide tons of ambiance, but gas fireplaces can be a close second. Electric fireplaces are the easiest to retrofit, with no venting required, and the most bud- get-friendly. However, the romance is usually lacking. “An electric fireplace doesn’t come close to providing the same aesthetic that a gas or wood-burning fireplace does,” Purple Cherry says. But with a few tweaks, an electric fireplace can be more alluring. “Look for units that are a minimum of 12 inches deep, potentially have a back mirror, and offer a wide range of control to influence the flame's brightness, color, and flicker speed,” she notes. “In addition, a more realistic-looking wooden log set will contribute to the authentic feel of the fireplace.” ■
