HEIRLOOM CHEST WITH FAMILY SCRATCHITI

the water lilies—there’s a special one that blooms bright, bright yellow.”

This ornate antique chest from Hard- en’s grandfather carries a personal touch—his sister Eulala carved her name on the top marble. “Aren’t the handles beautiful? I thought they were walnuts, but my eldest child has said that they’re figs,” says Harden. Her eldest, in fact, is named Eulala, in tribute to her fore- bears, and the piece, which has been in the family for ages, is beloved. “It’s truly a beautiful, beautiful antique,” she says. “I want to say it was almost from the wagon circles, although that’s not quite true, but it did travel from Ohio to Texas.” HER KAYAK “Most people can enjoy a spiritual connection to nature, and once you have that, it can transform you forever. I’ve had some camping and hiking experiences that were just phenomenal, sitting up in the clouds,” says Harden. When upstate, though, one of her favorite ways to explore is by water. “I take little kayak tours, and in late May and June, I get to see purple irises bloom along the side of the lake. You can barely see them because they’re such a faint laven- der, but when you kayak right up to them, they’re so beautiful. So I take people down to show them those or

BIRTHDAY BINOCULARS “This was a gift from the kids to me on my 60th birthday because they know I love to birdwatch. They didn’t just give me boring binoculars. They bought that beautiful leather strap, they put the crystals on it and made it a really beautiful piece. I love it. It’s very powerful. They are literally one of my favorite things,” says Harden. “I go out on the lake in the kayak and see eagles, great blue herons, little green herons, Canada geese, and more. I like to see what new things I can identify.” HEARTH OWLS The owls’ amber eyes glow when the fire is roaring and, like many items in Harden’s retreat, the woodsy setting inspired their purchase. “We have a Great Horned Owl on the property and, I’m telling you, its size and wingspan is just enormous. It’s a great symbol of what’s here—I think everything I really love is, in some way, about nature and family,” says Harden, who discovered them at a local antique store and assumed they were one of a kind. “But I met someone else recently who said, ‘Oh, we have those same owls.’” Either way, they’re here to stay, says Harden: “They’re whimsical and beautiful.” ■
