GROWTH* IN SMALL BREWERY PRODUCTION

CRAFT BREWERIES IN NEW ZEALAND

By Katie Davis T he New Zealand beer market has seen the average price for a litre of craft beer rise in the past year. Showing that customer demand is still high for this sector and that con- sumers are prepared to pay a premium for quality craft beer. The industry itself showed a decrease in its growth in 2016 however, brewers of craft beer still managed to take a larger share of the total beer market, according to the annual ANZ Craft Beer Industry Insights report. The ANZ Craft Beer Industry Insights report shows: • 194 craft breweries in New Zealand are producing more than 1600 unique beers. • Small breweries beer consumption is up almost 1 percent to 5.8 percent of total beer consumption by volume. With the industry growth rate dropping 6 percent to 22 percent by volume consumed and 7 percent in marketing value to 32 percent. There is a sense that the industry is approaching its place where supply has met demand. In saying that, there are many industries in New Zealand and around the world that would be thrilled to have that type of growth rate in their industries. The challenge for the craft brewers now is to keep increas- ing demand and not sacrifice the quality the customers are willing to pay the premium price for.
