5

Years of Synergy

S ynergy started with myself, my husband, and one other employee. This was in 2012. Since we opened our doors, we’ve grown, we’ve created jobs, and the community has embraced us and the work we do. Today, our staff has expanded to 20 people. This is a group of people I am proud to call my team. Over the past five years, we have certainly had our fair share of challenges, along with the successes. These were challenges we persevered through, one step at a time. There was a time when we dealt with flooding. Then, there was nearby construction that caused all kinds of headache. But we didn’t let these things get us down. Every challenge opens the door for creativity. Our staff is made up of imaginative and thoughtful people who came together to keep operations going, no matter what. There’s nothing more encouraging than seeing our staff step up and keep the focus squarely on our patients. There’s also the challenge that comes with serving a military community. Over the years, we’ve had to work with a higher level of turnover as families come and go. It’s an in interesting challenge to face, and in many ways, it’s helped make our team that much stronger.

We’ve worked hard to assemble a team of like-minded individuals who are not only committed to our vision of care, but who can look back at us and see a clinic where they can grow as professionals and within community.

Early on, and when we were building our team, some people had their doubts. They thought it might be a gamble to work with new business. But they saw the potential in what John and I had put together. The more we grew, the more we were able to innovate and that doubt became a thing of the past. Through innovation, we were able to create opportunities that aren’t available anywhere else. Now that we are a team of 20, we are delivering more to our patients and our community than ever before, from trigger point dry needling to tai chi group fitness classes. You’ll even find us out and about at local sporting events and at high schools, where we do screenings and offer advice to our young athletes healthy and active in the sports they love. And speaking of our young athletes, with school back in session for the fall, we’ve extended our hours of operation. That’s another great thing about having a staff of 20! We know, with kids back

at school and just about everyone else back at work, that it’s not always convenient to see a therapist during traditional working hours. We want to be there for you when you need us. I’m excited to see where we go next. The past five years have been an amazing ride, and I’m glad to have spent it with such an amazing group of people, challenges, successes, and all!

Keep Your Trick

Trick-or-Treaters Safe

This Halloween

treaters head out to collect that sweet candy, swap out masks with face paint. It might take a few practice runs, but face paint can be just as cool. Make sure to test for allergic reactions first. Know the Rules of the Road It is important for trick-or-treaters of all ages to know how to behave safely as they walk down the sidewalks. They should always look both ways before crossing the street, never run out between parked cars, and make sure oncoming traffic is completely stopped before they step out into the road. Kids under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult, and older children should stick with their friends and never trick or treat alone. Trick-or-treating is a wonderful childhood tradition, and it shouldn’t end in tragedy. Talk to your kids about the risks and make sure they know why these rules are necessary. When you keep safety in mind, your trick- or-treaters can focus on the best part of Halloween: getting the most candy!

Light Up the Night Brightly colored costumes will help your child be more visible in the dark. That said, if your ghouls and goblins have their hearts set on being a real creature of the night, flashlights, glow-in- the-dark bracelets, and reflective tape attached to candy bags can help trick- or-treaters remain visible to drivers. Dress for Comfort The cold might not bother Elsa, but your trick-or-treater may not be ready to sing after the sun sets and the temperature drops. Have them wear jackets and gloves as needed and insist on shoes they can walk in. If your little princess is absolutely in love with her high heels, have her wear the pretty, uncomfortable shoes for pictures at the door, then switch into comfy sneakers before hitting the sidewalks. Keep Your Eyes on the Prize Masks can really bring a costume together, but they can also make it hard for young eyes to see where they’re going. Before trick-or-

You may wonder if trick-or-treating is safe, especially when stories of poisoned Halloween candy circulate every year. These terrifying tales have all been hoaxes, but beyond needlessly frightening parents, these urban legends take attention away from the real danger kids face while trick-or-treating. Safe Kids Worldwide reports that children are twice as likely to be struck by a car on Halloween than any other day of the year. Here’s what you need to remember before sending your little witches and knights out trick-or-treating.

TESTIMONIAL What Our Patients Are Saying “I injured my hip while running several months ago. After about four months in pain, I was unable to maintain my workout routine, and I was referred to physical therapy. A friend recommended Synergy specifically. After my first appointment with Dr. Moss, I felt confident that I had chosen the right facility and would receive quality care. Dr. Moss and

Dr. Litrell were all great to work with and gave me exercises that quickly strengthened my hip and resolved my hip pain. Kelsey and Shelby were great technicians and very friendly. I am now able to perform all of my strength and condition at the gym and return to my normal lifestyle after just two short months of treatment. I would like to thank Dr. Moss and the entire staff at Synergy for your quality care!”

The Benefits of Essential Oils

Use Diffusers to Reap the

Benefits of Essential Oils

If you’ve stopped by a health store recently, you’ve no doubt seen a huge selection of essential oils. These liquids, which contain concentrated, natural aroma compounds found in plants, are the basis of aromatherapy, one of the most popular trends in holistic health. Aromatherapy involves applying these oils to the skin or spraying them into the air. Skin application requires that you use diluted oils, because aromatic compounds are strong and can cause irritation. As a result of these concerns, many essential oil acolytes have turned to diffusers to get the benefits of aromatherapy in a safe, wonderful-smelling manner. In addition to filling your house with an all- natural, appealing perfume, aromatherapy has been touted as a way to help with everything from stress and insomnia to

cognitive function and mood enhancement. To receive these benefits, you’ll need to pick up a diffuser and some oils. With so many options, though, how do you know which one is right for you? There is no shortage of methods to diffuse essential oils. Nebulizing diffusers don’t require any heat source, instead atomizing the essential oils. They are extremely effective, but they are also large and expensive. Ultrasonic diffusers are similarly heatless, preserving the oils. This type of diffuser can also work as a humidifier, making it a valuable multitasker. Heat and evaporative diffusers are cheaper options, but they tend to alter oils or separate particles according to size.

essential oils and put your new toy to use. Lemon oil is antibacterial and antiseptic, and will freshen your environment. Cinnamon oil can clear congestion and has a homey, autumnal scent. Eucalyptus oil is an air purifier, but its scent is strong and not for everybody. If you want to de-stress, try rosemary oil, which decreases your cortisol levels. Take note that you should alert your doctor before partaking in aromatherapy if you’re pregnant, nursing, or on any medication. While most essential oils are perfectly safe to diffuse, the compounds in certain oils can combine with medication and trigger adverse side effects. Once you begin diffusing, you’ll never go back to commercial, chemical scent sprays. The benefits are evident, and the results smell sweet.

Once you decide on the best diffuser for your home, you need to select a few
