New Director Generals to head HMRC’s Customer Services and Customer Compliance Groups 1 August 2017
Following the departures of Ruth Owen and Jennie Granger in June, two new Director Generals have been appointed to lead the Customer Services and Customer Compliance Groups.
Angela MacDonald, currently Operational Excellence Director in HMRC, will step up to lead the Customer Services Group, which oversees most of HMRC’s interaction with individual taxpayers, tax credits recipients, and small and mid- sized businesses online, by phone or face-to-face. Penny Ciniewicz, currently Chief Executive of the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), will now return to HMRC to lead the Customer Compliance Group, which includes compliance for all customer groups, from large businesses to individuals, as well as HMRC’s counter-avoidance and fraud investigation functions.
Melissa Tatton, currently Director for Individuals and Small Business Compliance, HMRC, will step up to take over as Chief Executive for the VOA.
Approved by the Prime Minister, these appointments follow an extensive competition across the Civil Service and public and private sectors.

New help for small businesses launched by HMRC 4 August 2017
A new online tax forum and dedicated webchat service for small businesses and the self-employed has been launched by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The Small Business Online Forum is a quick and easy way for small businesses to get answers to their tax questions as well as help with: starting a business support for growing a business – including taking on employees and expanding buying and selling abroad completing tax returns tax credits.
The forum can be accessed here .
Linked to the forum, HMRC’s new dedicated webchat service offers direct support to businesses and the self- employed.
The Small Business Online Forum forms part of the government’s business tax roadmap announced at Budget 2016. A pilot was launched in March 2017 and since then the forum has grown to have more than a 1,000 registered users.
The forum does not deal with questions about taxpayers’ individual circumstances. Any comments which include personal information will be deleted. While no personal or case-specific information is posted on the forum, customers may be offered help through HMRC’s webchat service and their personal case handled by an adviser.
