Our Community: Haitian Heritage A celebration of Haitian culture

GRADES K–3

Haitian Creole is one of the most common native languages of our multilingual learners. Yet, few classroom libraries have high-quality books that reflect Haitian/Haitian American culture. So, we partnered with Jamie Hector, Haitian American actor and storyteller, to curate the first and only Haitian-themed book collection for kids !

Meet the mentor

Jamie Hector is a Brooklyn-born actor who studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. He is best known for his roles in film and television, including The Wire , Bosch , Queen of the South , and We Own This City . However, one of Jamie’s

favorite roles is as the founder of Moving Mountains Inc., a nonprofit organization that gives children the opportunity to study the arts free of charge. He has also authored several children’s books with Scholastic which have been transadapted into Haitian Creole and are included in the Classroom Collections and the Take-Home Book Packs.

Classroom Collections: These collections are perfect for reading aloud, providing texts that build knowledge, enhance vocabulary, and offer opportunities for speaking and writing to deepen comprehension and personal connections. With two copies of each title, students can choose to read with a partner, making the reading experience more exciting and interactive. ⊲ 16 books per grade level (8 titles; 2 copies each) ⊲ Teacher Resource Take-Home Book Packs: Take-Home Book Packs build home libraries with stories and characters that represent not just the classroom, but the world at large. ⊲ 3 engaging fiction titles per grade (2 bilingual English/Haitian Creole; 1 English) ⊲ Bilingual Family Letter (English/Haitian Creole)
