Meet Schiller & Hamilton’s Professional Volunteer, Attorney Kevin Phillips CALLED TO HELP
WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK
I came to know Schiller & Hamilton Law Firm through my volunteer work in the Beaufort region. I kept running into Bennett Schiller and the Schiller & Hamilton team at many of the events where I was volunteering. I was struck by how involved they were in their community. Little did I know that just over a year later I would start my tenure at the very firm that caught my attention because of its engagement. Growing up in Snellville, Georgia, I fell in love with South Carolina when I attended the College of Charleston and the Charleston School of Law. When I graduated, I knew I wanted to live, work, and give back in the Beaufort area, and I became involved in my community almost immediately. This was a lesson I learned back in Snellville, and I couldn’t wait to give back to the area I had chosen as my home. I’ve been called a professional volunteer. I started with the Leadership Beaufort program, which offers local community members an in-depth understanding of the many components of the community around us. It was at Leadership Beaufort that I first met Bennett. Then, I discovered Bennett was on the board of the Beaufort-Jasper YMCA of the Low Country after I was asked to join the board, too. The universe kept bringing us together through our mutual love of giving back to the community. When an opportunity came up to join Bennett and his team at Schiller & Hamilton as an attorney, I had to take the chance. I knew this was a firm that believed in bettering its community, and I wanted so much to be part of that. Within my first few days at the firm, I could tell the staff’s involvement was much deeper than I realized. Their action wasn’t just a front they put on; it was something each member of their team lived every day. It doesn’t matter how big the case is or who the accident or incident is affecting. The Schiller & Hamilton Law Firm professionals truly have the community’s back in every action they take. I feel honored to have found a firm like Schiller & Hamilton to practice law. This is the kind of place I wanted to be at when I made the decision to attend law school as an undergraduate. Every day, we coordinate legal solutions for citizens facing some of the most unexpected and harrowing experiences you can imagine. No one wakes up saying, “Oh, I hope I get to call a lawyer today!”

“THE SCHILLER & HAMILTON LAW FIRM PROFESSIONALS TRULY HAVE THE COMMUNITY’S BACK IN EVERY ACTION THEY TAKE. ”
But as attorneys, we have a unique opportunity to step into the middle of the crisis and positively impact someone’s life. We try to make them whole again, as much as we can. Today, I’m a few months into my tenure working in the workers’ compensation, personal injury, and social security divisions of Schiller & Hamilton Law Firm. Every day, as we help clients who are struggling to cope with paying medical bills or navigating an uncertain future with their employer, I’m reminded of what I love most about my job: I have a chance to support others in a meaningful and powerful way. Because of our work and fight, they can put food on the table and keep the lights on at home. That’s enough to motivate me to do more.

P.S. I continue to volunteer in my community today, and I was even elected to the Port Royal Town Council this winter. I’ve had a blast planning local events and, more recently, helping our local businesses return to a new normal.

THE BEST BASKETBALL PODCAST DOESN’T
All About ‘HORSE’
“Sup nerds? It’s basketball!”
And so begins every episode of “HORSE,” a basketball podcast that proudly claims to be about everything basketball — except for the stats. As a part of the Multitude collective of podcasts, “HORSE” is co-hosted by creators and experienced podcasters Eric Silver and Mike Schubert. The duo are real- life friends and huge basketball fans. So, what does a sports podcast cover if not the numbers on the scoreboard? Petty drama and Twitter beefs, of course. “HORSE” was listed by Vulture as one of the top comedy podcasts for NBA fans, which is very high praise given the saturated podcast market. “HORSE” is appealing to basketball fans and non- fans alike because it looks at the sport in a completely different light. Silver and Schubert started “HORSE” in 2018 with a mission to prove that you don’t have to know the stats of every player on every team to like basketball. This “no gatekeeping allowed” mentality resonates with listeners, and the podcast’s audience is made up of a mix of hardcore basketball fans and folks who have never been to an NBA game in their life.
C OVID-19 has left many of us with more questions than answers. We wonder when it will be safe to host weddings or attend large gatherings again or when we will be able to get a vaccine. And for most of us, our concerns surrounding COVID-19 boil down to one big question: “How will this impact our future?” This month, we want to break down two specific questions related to COVID-19 that have to do with workers’ compensation and your rights. Question No. 1: Will I still receive workers’ compensation benefits if I’m laid off or furloughed? The answer to this question is easy, but we understand why it’s a concern. Yes, you will still receive your workers’ comp payments if you are laid off or furloughed. Your need for that income to pay your medical bills and necessities for your family does not go away simply because there is a pandemic. You are still entitled to that compensation. Question No. 2: Can I file a workers’ comp claim if I contract COVID-19 at work? This question is a bit more complex. The short answer is yes … and no. In theory, most state laws can be interpreted to include COVID-19 as an injury or illness that is payable by workers’ comp. However, precisely identifying where you contracted COVID-19 is difficult. Since it’s a virus that can be contracted anywhere, employees are tasked with definitively proving they caught the disease at work or that it is associated with the type of work they do. And if that’s done, the complications in the payment process for COVID-19 workers’ comp claims can be compounded because of the payment periods and two-week quarantine required with the virus. Regardless, you have the right to a fair, safe work environment, and when that promise is broken and you’re injured, you deserve compensation for the toll it takes. This is a right afforded to us from the Industrial Revolution, and it’s a fight the Schiller & Hamilton Law Firm is proud to support our clients in battling. If you have questions about a potential claim or the workers’ comp process, contact our team at Schiller & Hamilton today. Call 803.366.0333 and let us know how we can continue to have your back.

T TALK ABOUT STATS
From candy corn to cool breezes at fall festivals, there’s nothing quite like the fall in South Carolina. But this year, the season may look a little different. Even though we all have to try to stay safe and practice social distancing, we don’t have to give up what makes fall so great. Try these three family-friendly fall activities to stay safe and enjoy the best that a South Carolina fall has to offer. CORN MAZES Start your fall adventure by getting lost! Corn mazes stimulate your family’s problem-solving and teamwork abilities, while offering a safe, socially distanced way to celebrate fall. And there’s no shortage of options. Check out the Field of Scream haunted corn maze in Cherokee County for some hair-raising adventures or venture northeast of Beaufort to the family-friend West Farm Corn Maze, where other activities like hay rides and a pumpkin patch are available as well. You just might find a new tradition and a favorite local farm to support. CAMPING We’re pretty lucky to enjoy gorgeous weather in South Carolina all year long, but fall is when our natural beauty is put on display. Catch some of the gorgeous reds, yellows, purples, and oranges in local forests as you sit by a toasty campfire on a cool autumn day. A camping adventure just might be the perfect, peaceful escape your family needs, but be sure to stock up on warm socks, sweaters, and blankets. The nights will be cold, but not sweating or having to swat away mosquitos during your adventure will be well worth it. HARVEST AT HOME The South Carolina peach season is just ending this September, so it’s the perfect time to try some new fall recipes at home. Whip up a peach cobbler for the family or challenge each other to a cooking competition using only locally grown peaches and other produce. Fall is the perfect time to try local foods and support local farmers. (Plus, the health benefits of local, seasonal fruits and vegetables cannot be denied!) We’re willing to bet you’ll find a favorite recipe that will become a staple in harvest seasons to come. Please inquire with individual businesses about their COVID-19 hours and precautions. Visit DiscoverSouthCarolina.com for more socially distanced yet exciting fall activities.
Rather than focus on the number of games a team has won, “HORSE” discusses the number of tweets angry players have posted on Twitter. They also rank rap songs that mentioned the NBA, discuss why team names don’t make sense, and even talk about the time when Michael Jordan was almost seriously injured by a samurai. The stats and celebrities of the NBA suddenly seem more accessible after learning that professional basketball teams have just as much drama as you and your office mates. “We only talk about drama and history and ridiculousness,” says Silver. “We don’t want to talk about whether or not LeBron James is the best basketball player of all time. We would like to talk about the time that one of LeBron’s teammates was dating his mom and like that’s ... it’s infinitely more interesting … It gets you to become a basketball fan in a totally different way.”
Listen to the most recent episode at HorseHoops.com and discover how basketball is so much more than what happens on the court.

3 Fun Family Activities for Fall
GARDENING, GOLD, AND PHOTO SHOOTS
3 Fun Family Activities for Fall
It’s fall, which means social media will soon be saturated with pictures of your friends enjoying “classic” fall activities. Photos of leaf peeping, apple picking, and the occasional scarecrow run rampant. But rather than following the herd, you can make your family the trendsetter of unique fall activities! Here are a few outdoor endeavors your family will love. Get gardening. Fall is the time for harvest, but if you want to enjoy flowers in the spring, it’s also a time for planting. The cooler autumn air is easier on plants, but the soil is still warm enough for roots to grow before the ground freezes for winter. Tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths are all spring bulbs that need to be planted in the fall. Do a little research with your family to determine the best time to start planting in your area. Pan for gold. Here’s one that’s really off the beaten path: Take your family on an adventure panning for gold! Start by planning a road trip out to an old ghost town. Many of them have great tourist attractions that include gold panning. You probably won’t get rich, but it will still be a fun story. If you’re not able to make the trip, you can always create a gold panning operation at home! Visit MessForLess.net/panning-for-gold-activity for a great step-by-step guide on how to go panning for gold in your own backyard. Plan a fall photo shoot. It’s time to freshen up those family pictures hanging around the house. The changing leaves provide a beautiful background for any family portrait. Better yet, the cooler temperatures mean that an outdoor photo shoot won’t be nearly as uncomfortable as it would be in the summer. You can take your pictures by the trees in the front yard or make a daytrip of it. What about pictures at the corn maze or pumpkin patch? It’s never too soon to start planning this year’s holiday card.
Spend this fall outdoors and create great new memories with your family!
