EMBRUN | Man’s best friends in Russell Township won’t have to wait too long for a place of their own to run free. Council accepted a recommendation from administration during its April 22 ses- sion to allow construction to begin on the community dog park project whenever the organizing committee in charge is ready to go ahead. Last year council agreed to set aside a par- cel of municipal land for use as an off-leash dog park in Russell Township. Council also approved a municipal contribution to the project both to create a parking lot for dog- owners visiting at the park and to provide support funding for the facility’s annual op- eration cost. This year’s township budget has $15,000 allocated for the parking area portion of the project. A condition is attached that the money would be spent only after the orga- nizing committee had raised the funds to build a security fence for the dog park. Currently, the committee has raised half of the estimated $52,000 cost for the proj- ect in the form of commitments from busi- nesses, groups, and individuals for either in- kind service or supplies and also received some cash pledges.
