GRANTS BOOSTING OPPORTUNITIES FOR INSTALLERS WILL BE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE NATIONAL RESIDENTIAL RETROFIT PLAN IN IRELAND AND WARM HOMES PLAN IN NORTHERN IRELAND…

New funding for heat pumps

Funding has been extended to support the uptake of heat pumps and other sustainable energy solutions across households in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. Irish Energy Minister Darragh O’Brien launched a new National Residential Retrofit Plan on January 26, aimed at helping homeowners upgrade their homes with heat pumps, insulation and solar energy. A new fixed grant is available up a maximum of €12,500 for heat pumps, including €6,500 for the pump, €2,000 for upgrading radiators and pipework and a €4,000 bonus for the installation. An additional grant allows homeowners to upgrade their windows and doors to meet the standard needed to install

a heat pump. A previous restriction, requiring a minimum energy uplift of 100kW hours per square metre, per year for eligible installations, will be removed from March 3. Northern Ireland is, meanwhile, set to receive a specific allocation from the UK Government’s £15bn Warm Homes Plan launched on January 20. Low-income and fuel-poor families will be able to get full, UK Government- backed grants for heat pumps, smart controls, battery storage, solar panels and insulation. NI’s Sustainable Energy Programme is administered by the Energy Saving Trust on behalf of the Utility Regulator in NI, with further details on the additional funding to come.

DELIVERING SMARTER PUMPING AND SIMPLER INSTALLS, THE MANUFACTURER WILL BE SHOWCASING ITS ULTRA- COMPACT ESYBOX POP, EVOSTA, EVOPLUS LITE AND GENIX LINES… DAB Pumps heads to Plumbex Limerick

Evoplus Lite offers compact design.

Pop includes built-in connectivity.

DAB Pumps will be exhibiting at Plumbex, giving Irish installers,

merchants and specifiers the chance to get hands on with some of its most in- demand domestic and light commercial pumping solutions. Visitors to the DAB stand (no 105) will be able to explore the latest products from the EsyBox range, including the ultra-compact EsyBox Pop. The latest and smallest member of the EsyBox family has been specifically created for properties where space is limited but reliable water pressure is essential. Designed to fit neatly under a sink or inside a bathroom cupboard, it delivers a noticeable boost to domestic water pressure without requiring major installation work. The EsyBox Pop has recently been recognised with an iF Design Award, reflecting its compact, installer-friendly design and arrives fully assembled, with rotatable fittings to support a quick and tidy fit. A modular construction makes routine servicing easier by allowing individual components to be accessed and replaced without stripping down the full unit. Also on display will be Evosta, DAB’s efficient, installer-friendly circulator pump solution, alongside Evoplus Lite, which offers a practical option for applications where dependable performance, straightforward commissioning and compact design matter. Together, the

range reflects DAB’s focus on making pump upgrades less disruptive, more energy efficient and easier to support on site. Rounding-off the product line up is Genix, DAB’s compact lifting station solution, designed for challenging drainage situations where gravity discharge isn’t possible. With more projects requiring clever solutions around plant rooms, basements and refurbishments, Genix provides a dependable option for handling wastewater and supporting compliant installations. A key theme across the stand will be connectivity and the growing role it plays in pump performance monitoring and preventative support. The EsyBox Pop includes built-in connectivity, enabling installers to monitor performance remotely via the DAB H₂D app, helping to troubleshoot issues, validate performance and reduce unnecessary callouts. Adam Ferneyhough, Country Director for the UK & Ireland at DAB Pumps,

says, “Plumbex Limerick is a brilliant opportunity to meet the trade, talk about the real challenges installers are facing and demonstrate effective solutions that genuinely make a difference on site. From compact pressure boosting with EsyBox Pop, to efficient circulation and wastewater lifting solutions, we’re looking forward to showing visitors what the latest generation of DAB technology can deliver.” With a strong emphasis on ease of installation, reliable performance and smarter system management, DAB’s stand will offer a practical insight into how modern pumping technology is evolving to meet today’s expectations, both for the trade and the end-user. Dr Deirdre Lillis, President of TU Dublin, said, “These enhancements will not only support national skills needs and drive economic growth, but also strengthen TU Dublin’s role in providing high-quality, practice- based education across our campuses.” www.tudublin.ie TU Dublin boosts plumbing apprenticeships

juggling multiple suppliers and more time delivering completed projects to a high standard. Whether you’re fitting a compact ensuite, upgrading a master bathroom or specifying products for a multi-unit residential development, Instinct has the breadth of product choice to support your specification. A key advantage for installers is the variety of finishes and design choices available across taps, fixtures and fittings. This flexibility allows you to match product aesthetics with the wider design scheme of a project without having to source specialist items from third parties. Trade-friendly features For the installer, every brand must pass a simple test: are the products easy to fit, reliable once installed and supported with the right technical information? Instinct scores strongly in all three categories.

The well-engineered products not only reduce installation time but also mean fewer call-backs and greater confidence in long-lasting performance. Instinct packs its bathroom range with practical features that streamline installation. Clear technical documentation and dimension guides are available, helping avoid guesswork on site. The products are designed to comply with relevant standards and regulations, giving installers peace of mind that what they install meets regulatory expectations. A partner, not just a product For contractors working to fixed project budgets, specifying Instinct products can help control costs while still achieving a high-quality finish. The brand’s design language and product finish ensure that even value-oriented solutions look and feel premium.

THE NEW ALTEA SLATE SHOWER TRAYS NOW FEATURE HEXALYTE TECHNOLOGY, PRECISION ENGINEERED FROM A GLASS-FIBRE REINFORCED COMPOSITE MATERIAL… MyLife introduces Hexalyte®

In an industry where performance and aesthetics go hand in hand, MyLife has re-engineered its popular Altea Slate Shower Tray to meet the demands of today’s installers and bathroom designers. The new-and-improved Altea Slate Shower Trays now feature Hexalyte technology, crafted from a glass-fibre reinforced composite material that forms a precise hexagonal structure beneath the tray. This innovative reinforced internal support means the new Altea Hexalyte Tray is up to 38% lighter than the average slate shower tray and delivers true durability without compromise. The reinforced composite material is resistant to cracking and warping, offering reassurance for long-term use, which is backed by MyLife’s lifetime guarantee

when the product is registered online. The Altea surface includes hydro‑reflective properties that guide water directly towards the waste, and it carries a Class C anti‑slip rating, the highest available barefoot slip‑resistance standard, an increasingly important feature for homeowners and specifiers. Alongside the new engineered structure of the tray, discolouration, shrinkage and distortion are also eliminated, and the Altea is formed with zero joint lines, creating a seamless and luxury finish. Whilst durability is no doubt a priority when it comes to wet installations, flexibility is also a must, and that’s why the rectangular Altea Hexalyte Trays offer cut-to-fit adaptability of up to 75mm, making them ideal for small or awkwardly- shaped bathroom spaces where precision

truly matters. For retailers seeking the perfect blend of standout design and real technical innovation, MyLife’s Altea Hexalyte Trays deliver lasting strength with refined style, making them an essential choice for today’s bathrooms. Speak with your MyLife Area Sales Manager today about updating your showroom display with the new Altea Hexalyte Tray. “The new Altea Hexalyte Tray is up to 38% lighter than the average slate shower tray and delivers true durability without compromise.”

APHCI HAS ENGAGED WITH ENERGY MINISTER DARRAGH O’BRIEN ON THE ROLE OF CONTRACTORS IN IRELAND’S ENERGY TRANSITION... Update:

Working towards a low-carbon future

The critical role plumbing and heating contractors play in Ireland’s evolving energy and climate landscape was the subject of a recent constructive and forward-looking discussion between the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors Ireland (APHCI) and Energy Minister Darragh O’Brien. APHCI wishes to thank Minister O’Brien for his time, openness and willingness to engage directly with the sector. The meeting provided an important opportunity to place contractors firmly at the centre of the national conversation on retrofit, low-carbon heating and climate action. Discussion focused on the realities of delivery on the ground, where plumbing and heating professionals are responsible for turning policy ambition into safe, compliant and effective outcomes in Irish homes and buildings. APHCI highlighted that as retrofit activity accelerates and new heating technologies are rolled out at scale, safety must remain

The transition to low-carbon heating systems requires continuous upskilling of the workforce, supported by accessible, high-quality training aligned with real- world installation conditions. APHCI reiterated that contractors are fully committed to lifelong learning, but that training pathways must be practical, well- coordinated and responsive to change.

contractors and technical specialists. This group will develop and present viable, evidence-based recommendations to Government, focused on safe delivery, workforce capacity, regulatory clarity and value for money. Pat Jordan, APHCI Chair, said, “Contractors are on the frontline of Ireland’s energy transition. Safety, skills and proper regulation must remain central to retrofit delivery, protecting households, installers and public investment. Our members are committed to playing their part, and we welcome the Minister’s openness to engaging directly with the sector on practical solutions.” APHCI views this engagement as an important step in ensuring that Ireland’s energy transition is grounded in reality, informed by experience, and delivered to the highest standards.

essential to protect householders, installers and public investment. The Association stressed that a safety-first approach must underpin all elements of climate action in the built environment. The discussion also emphasised the importance of robust regulation and clear standards. APHCI outlined the need for consistent and enforceable regulatory frameworks that support competent contractors while preventing poor-quality or unsafe work. Clear standards provide certainty for installers, confidence for consumers and value for the state as retrofit programmes expand nationwide. Training and skills development formed another central pillar of the conversation.

supporting Government climate targets. Plumbing and heating contractors are already delivering significant emissions reductions through energy efficiency upgrades, system optimisation and the deployment of renewable and low-carbon technologies. Success will depend on partnership — between Government, regulators, training bodies, manufacturers and the workforce. The Minister was open and receptive to hearing solutions directly from the sector, recognising the value of on-the-ground expertise in shaping workable policy. In response, APHCI has established an expert working group, drawing on experienced

TRADE PROFILE

EIGHTY YEARS AFTER STARTING OUT IN DUBLIN’S PLUMBING & HEATING TRADE, JIMMY HAMILTON STILL FOLLOWS INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENTS, WHILE HIS SONS PAUL AND THOMAS ARE KEEPING THE FAMILY TRADITION ALIVE WITH P&T HAMILTON ENGINEERING… ‘The guy who can solve all problems’

World War II had just ended when 14-year-old Jimmy Hamilton followed his father into the plumbing and heating trade. His father had worked for the Dublin Corporation and builder H&J Martin while Jimmy’s first job - alongside gaining his certificate of competence from the technical college on Bolton Street - was with ‘The Rusher’ O’Reilly. So called for a propensity to leap from his van when it was stopped at traffic lights, and use the opportunity to measure and cut pipe, The Rusher cut a striking figure around Dublin with his bowler hat, long coat and hobnail boots. Jimmy had an excellent teacher at the college in Johnny Bolton and regards The Rusher as equally instrumental in his early training. “I learned everything about the trade and that stood me in good stead all down the years,” says Jimmy. “I was always the man sent into meetings because if anyone had specialist questions to ask, I could answer them. Really everything I learned was from The Rusher O’Reilly and Tim Magill, who was a great trainer as well.” Jimmy went to work for Tim when The Rusher died in 1960. “I got a great training there, it was unbelievable,” says Jimmy. “Heating was in its infancy, and I took the opportunity to learn as much as I could.” It was while working for Tim that Jimmy became known as the guy who can solve all problems. Six plumbers had already failed to identify the issue in a domestic property where hot water was running out after five minutes. “I’d a plan in my mind about what I was going to do,” he says. “There was a long corridor from the hot press to the bathroom, and I lay

down on the floor and told the apprentice to turn the water on and off. I could hear where it was stopping, opened up the floor right there and was able to locate a bending spring in the pipe causing the problem. I was famous for that sort of stuff; I could pinpoint anything.” Hamilton & Fay In 1967, Jimmy started a company with his brother Sean Hamilton and business partner Desi Fay. Hamilton & Fay initially delivered small housing scheme contracts in partnership with Duggan Brothers and public sector projects with HA O’Neill. The company’s early years were not without mishap. Jimmy was once left perilously stranded when a student from the deaf school at the Dominican Convent in Cabra tied a donkey to the bottom of a 30-foot ladder he had climbed to clean gutters. “My apprentice said there was no way he was going near the donkey as I would be a goner if it moved,” says Jimmy. “Anyway,

it all ended well as the girl reappeared and untied the rope without incident, but it wasn’t very funny at the time.” In those days, the role of plumbers was more varied. Jimmy impressed an engineer over from England with his leadwork for the jockey’s weighing room at Leopardstown Racecourse, turning 16 separate pieces in one lead gutter. “I used to do all the flashings on chimneys and valley gutters, and Desi was great at lead welding,” he says. “We also worked with copper pipes. There are bending machines now but, in those days, we had to bend the pipe with sand.” Hamilton & Fay soon expanded into larger commercial contracts for big retail names such as McDonald’s, Dunnes Stores and Paddy Power. In partnership with Mannings, the business secured lucrative work at Penneys, Quinnsworth and subsequently Tesco, and its workforce swelled to 30 employees including sons Paul and Thomas and daughter Marie.
