ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Appointment, reappointment, or promotion to Assistant Professor is based on the applicant's ability to provide excellent patient care according to the standards set by the candidate's department. The individual should be developing expertise in his/her selected field of clinical specialty (as judged by board eligibility or board certifications) and should be able to handle most routine clinical situations. Evaluations from the candidate's peers, colleagues, division chief, and department director should reflect the individual's clinical skills. Participation in the teaching program of the college is required and must reflect high level of engagement and contribution. ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR Candidates for appointment, reappointment, or promotion to Associate Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Assistant Professor. Appointment or promotion to Associate Professor requires continuous demonstration of excellence in patient care, teaching, research and/or administration. Regional recognition as a consultant in a clinical specialty, invitations for speaking engagements in clinical matters, and extensive clinical practice are necessary for promotion to the Associate Professor level. The individual should be capable of handling all common and most unusual clinical situations in the relevant areas of expertise. Individuals who wish to be promoted to the level of Associate must add value and contribute to the mission of their academic unit, health system or institutions beyond excellent daily patient care. Examples of domains that are appropriately considered for promotion are outlined below and include clinical program building, multi-disciplinary interaction, safety and quality development, hospital administration and community outreach, education and participation in research. Contributions to education in the course of clinical practice arerequired. Evidence of excellence in clinical service include: 1. Appropriate board certification and/or recertification is expected except in rare circumstances. 2. Evaluations from the candidate's peers, colleagues, students, patients, division chief and/or department director outlining the clinical and service capabilities of the individual. Physicians who refer patients to the faculty member, as well as colleagues who work closely with him or her, have a particularly valuable perspective. 3. Local and regional recognition of clinical expertise, including invitations to speak at clinical seminars, courses and symposia. A high volume of patient referrals and requests for consultation are indicators of clinical excellence. 4. Active participation in local and national professional organizations. 5. Evidence of clinical program building and/or quality improvement initiatives.
