2. Documentation of teaching participation must include a description of the teaching activities, the number of hours of lecture and/or student contact, and the candidate's relative importance to the teaching program (course director, developer, contributions as percent of course teaching hours, etc.), and demonstration of effective mentoring (e.g., graduate student/post-doctoral fellow publications). 3. Quality of teaching is judged by (A) faculty peers, both within and outside the department, and (B) the department/program director. Student questionnaires may also be considered. Specific methods of evaluation and objective criteria (both qualitative and quantitative) must be clearly defined by the individual department. Evidence of excellence in service include: 1. Service and/or administration may include meaningful contributions to committees at the departmental, college, university, community, state, regional, national or international levels. Serving in administrative positions in the department or college is an important and necessary contribution particularly in roles that facilitated team science and/or building broader research programs such as Centers and Institutes. To the extent that these activities result in enhancing the mission of the college (research, teaching, patient care), they can contribute significantly to a candidate’s progression on the research tenure track. 2. Another service criteria includes offices held in national organizations that indicate greater recognition for contributions to the discipline. The quality of serviceand/or administration may be judged by soliciting evaluations from the chairs of committees, peers, and the departmental director. 3. National services for the scientific peer review community also elevates the profile of the investigator, the college and the university. Excellence in service and/or leaderships roles on peer review study sections or editorial boards for scientific journals represent important service criteria. PROFESSOR Candidates for appointment, reappointment, or promotion to Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Associate Professor. For initial appointment or promotion to Professor, the candidate must have achieved national and international recognition for a distinguished career exemplifying scholarship, excellence and productivity in research, successful teaching, and outstanding service and/or administration. For promotion, evidence of academic productivity while at UC has greater weight than previous work at other institutions.
