ANNEX 1 - COMMUNICATION

The method of communication to be used shall be agreed and unambiguous as part of the pre-job talk or JSA during the slinger signaller training. The below setup can be used in such regard.

All personnel who are involved shall be competent in the language chosen. Using verbal instructions in accordance with Table A1-1. Everyone participating in lifting operations shall have a radio for communication, unless all persons involved can communicate clearly with each other through direct speech.

Radio communication equipment with over-ear headphones and a microphone should be used.

Hand signals as shown in Table A3-1 may be used to supplement radio communication, and to secure a load in the event of loss of radio communication. Where hand signals are used the signaller must face the crane drive to ensure that the meaning of the signals given are clear to the crane driver. In order to avoid misunderstandings, confirmatory communication shall be used during lifting operations, unless this causes increased risk in the lifting operation. This means that the desired movement is specified by the signaller and the command is confirmed by the lifting appliance operator. Where appropriate, a communication method can be chosen whereby the signaller gives a continuous signal to continue the movement. The lifting appliance operator shall halt immediately if he or she does not receive the signal. All unnecessary use of radios, noise or activity that can distract the lifting appliance operator shall be avoided.
