FEATURE STORY
HEALING WITH HORSES BY SARAH MARINOS
Retired thoroughbred racehorses are proving to be valuable and sensitive assets in the world of equine therapy, and counsellor Lisa Coffey has tapped into this, sharing her knowledge with those who need it. “I came here in not a very good state. Physically and mentally, it’s given me the space and time to work out things and unravel,” recalled Cassandra Gatt. “I was in a paddock with a few horses and I was really struggling physically walking, and this horse came and let me lean against him and we just walked together, up and down and around, and I cried. Because he not only knew that I needed that, he was there to support it. It’s quite amazing. I love horses now. I love them.” Gatt is one of a number of Australians benefiting from equine-assisted psychotherapy at Racing Hearts on the Mornington Peninsula. The organisation is run by counsellor Lisa Coffey, who has worked in the racing industry for most of her life. Hailing from Ireland, where she worked as an apprentice jockey teacher, and at Aidan O’Brien’s stables helping fly his horses around the world among other jobs, Coffey ended up in Melbourne purely because of the Melbourne Cup. “The Melbourne Cup is just held in such high esteem in Europe,” she said. Her job search led her to Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Sheila Laxon, riding work at her stables in Seymour. A desire to experience racing in the city took her to Peter Moody’s stables, then to Racing Victoria and then into rehoming and retraining. This led to Racing Hearts, which combines her two areas of expertise – thoroughbred racehorses and counselling people towards better mental health. She has a team of psychologists, counsellors, mental health nurses, early childhood education specialists and therapeutic riding coaches working with their clients. “Having a mix of specialist knowledge in mental health areas is incredibly beneficial as it gives us a wealth of treatment options to choose from. This is a much better approach for the clients as each has unique and individual needs, so we tailor each plan to suit those needs,” said Coffey. “I describe equine-assisted psychotherapy as traditional counselling offered in a non-traditional way. It’s powerful when you connect people with horses,” said Coffey.
“Some clients want to nut out challenges they face at work, at home or in a relationship. Other people fit somewhere on the full spectrum of mental health diagnoses. We might work in the paddock or in the arena, and horses are brought into sessions in different ways. Clients may sit near the horse or lead or groom a horse. But it’s far more than going into a paddock and patting ponies. “While they’re with the horse, people become aware of the thoughts in their head, how those thoughts are impacting on their body and how things change for them when they are with the horse. They notice how the horse responds to their emotions. One woman noticed that when she had bad thoughts about herself, her body became rigid and the horse wouldn’t walk for her. When she changed her thinking to be more positive, the horse walked.” Coffey uses 12 retired racehorses (and is retraining four more) because of their versatility, trusting nature, and awareness. “We have a Shetland pony for young clients, but when she cracks it, we have to put her away! I’ve never had that with racehorses.” One of Coffey’s therapy horses is Hissing Sid, a back-to-back Warrnambool Cup winner who retired from racing in 2015. Sid has a slow and mellow nature. “Nothing is ever a hurry for Sid! He is great for settling nerves and working with clients who are nervous, because nothing fazes him,” said Coffey. Sid, along with another horse, Lagerfeld, recently helped approximately 70 people in Warrnambool learn more about relieving anxiety and coping with life’s challenges. “These horses provided support to those participants that no human therapist could ever offer in the same powerful way,” said Coffey. “Feedback included feelings of being heard, no judgement, extreme calmness, clear minds, relaxed body, decreased heart rates, friendship, conversation, safe touch, support and protection. For a lot of kids, it was the first time they recall experiencing some of those feelings.” Racing Hearts also runs a popular schools wellbeing program where 14 local schools currently attend the farm in school time, working through a program they have designed to link in with the Victorian Curriculum and its Personal and Social Capabilities Framework, complementing the wellbeing work already being done within the schools. They work on themes based on feedback from the school on the individual students’ needs, however, broader themes include emotional awareness, processing and expression,
FEATURE STORY
identification of boundaries and how to express them in a healthy way, how thoughts and feelings impact our bodies, our behaviour and those around us including how to deal with unexpected behaviour, clear communication and safe and healthy relationships. The schools receive funding from the education department and their local shires for the program. Racing Hearts is also piloting a school incursion program until the end of 2021, where the horses are taken to schools for sessions with students selected by the school. “Graham Salisbury was a good friend of mine, and the passing of Graham and Subzero has left a big gap in how we share the special gifts that OTT horses have to offer us, with young people and the community. The work they did was genuinely incredible. We want to honor that work by continuing it in a similar way with the addition of mental health support for the participants. The program is free for schools and entirely funded by us,” said Coffey.
“AWARENESS IS A BIG PART OF WHAT I DO, AND THESE HORSES ARE VERY RESPONSIVE. THEY ARE VERY ATTUNED TO HOW A CLIENT IS FEELING AND HOW THEY PRESENT.”

EQUINE WELFARE
FLEMINGTON FACILITIES SET THE STANDARD FOR TRAINING OF RACEHORSES BY MICHAEL MANLEY Flemington has cemented its position as one of Australia’s premier training centres with its new synthetic training track, according to leading trainers and officials. Flemington’s track manager Liam O’Keeffe said the opening of the new track, called Gallop Track, continued the VRC’s commitment to its trainers to provide the best possible training surfaces for their horses. He said it has given the 20 trainers based at Flemington another exceptional track option to work the 600 horses trained there. O’Keeffe said he expected that trainers would love the Gallop Track surface as it represented the latest chapter in the evolution and improvement of synthetic tracks. O’Keeffe explained the make-up of the surfacewas different to other synthetic tracks and would lead to a more consistent and safe surface year-round for horses to gallop on. “It’s a synthetic surface made up of sand and emulsions, which is an oily, wax type material that binds the material together. There are some fibres in that sand that soften the footing,” O’Keeffe said. High-quality sand sourced from a You Yangs quarry is being used, which is another one of the improvements. “It’s a beautifully coloured sand and it will give a nice cushiony surface for the horses to gallop on.” The new Gallop Track, which opened on 25 August, has replaced the old Pro- Ride track. O’Keeffe said over its 11 years the Pro-Ride track had done a great job, withstanding more than 200,000 gallops, but during that time the surface particles had become finer and the fibre had worn away. O’Keeffe said one of the advantages of the synthetic track was that it gave horses consistent footing. “That’s what the synthetic surface provides underneath with the fibre and the oil and the wax. It also allows a high volume of workload to be performed on the track.”
O’Keeffe said injury rates with gallopers had fallen due to the synthetic tracks.
“At the volume and the speed that horses go, there is a risk of injury so we’re always trying to improve our maintenance programs to reduce this.” “As time has gone on there have been fewer and fewer injuries due to the great new tracks and the products we have to maintain them. We also take feedback from the trainers, the riders and the vets as to what we can do better.” O’Keeffe said track maintenance was the most important role of his staff, which is made up of 25 full-time workers and a handful of casuals. “It’s certainly the largest part of our working week that is spent maintaining all of the tracks. “Each morning we go and measure all the surfaces. We get feedback from all the trainers and riders on how the tracks are riding. All of the tracks require different maintenance at all times of the year and we try to present them at 100 per cent every day in any type of weather condition.” O’Keeffe said the synthetic tracks require a lot of maintenance during winter when the weather is colder as the track firms up and conversely when it is hot in summer they tended to soften up.
The new Gallop Track is designed to handle these weather scenarios.
Supervising the installation and laying of the Flemington Gallop Track is Ian Pearse, known as the father of synthetic surfaces in Australia. 2021 has proven to be a momentous one for Pearse as he received a kidney transplant at the start of the year. After his health improved Pearse decided to get back into building synthetic tracks and he started a new company called Gallop Track. Pearse was the founder of Pro-Ride, the company that introduced synthetic tracks to Australia, but due to his ill health, he sold out of the business. Pearse said he has loved being involved in the installation of the Flemington track. “We see the opportunity as really exciting to be able to get back into the industry after five years off. We’ve done a few renovations at Newcastle, Lindsay Park and now the new track at Flemington.” “With the Gallop Track, we’ve created a system which stays more flexible under colder temperatures surfaces. We’ve added some UV stabilisers into it,
EQUINE WELFARE
so it’s got better resistance to and is more stable under heat, but is also more flexible when it’s cold.” “We’re a little bit more stable than other surfaces. We make them a little bit firmer which leads to more sure footing and a more stable surface.” Installing the new track, which is 2100 metres by 7.5 metres in circumference, and replacing the old track was a $1.6 million project funded by Racing Victoria and the VRC. The VRC has donated the old Pro-Ride track to other horse-sport establishments, which O’Keeffe had been an enjoyable and satisfying project to work on. “Firstly, we gave the local trainers the chance to use it for their properties and some have used it on their training farms,” O’Keeffe said. “After that, it’s been split. A portion has gone to Godolphin to use at its stud farm for mating barns, stallions and mares. We are also donating some to the Riding For The Disabled at Pakenhamwhich will help them build a new arena for the students to be able to ride on.” O’Keeffe said Lauriston Park pre-training centre at Corinella had also taken a portion of the Pro-Ride track. Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Mike Moroney said he viewed the installation of the Gallop Track as a continuation of the VRC’s commitment to Flemington as a training centre. “There are so many options for a trainer to use. There are so many tracks to use and the best thing about it is they are big spacious tracks. “They are also well marshalled. Everything is railed and there’s the tunnel for the horses to use to get to and from the track. It ticks all the boxes.” Fellow Melbourne Cup-winning local trainer Danny O’Brien said the VRC made training a priority, especially since Neil Wilson became chief executive and Steve Rosich was continuing that legacy. “Training’s a priority for the VRC. We’re lucky to be using a world-class facility,” he said. O’Brien said the installation of the Gallop Track only enhanced Flemington as a training base. He said the other key aspect of training at Flemington was the excellent track supervision and management of it by Liam O’Keeffe and his team. In fact, he is confident that Flemington trainers enjoy such great success because of this excellent training facility.
“THAT’S WHAT THE SYNTHETIC SURFACE PROVIDES UNDERNEATH WITH THE FIBRE AND THE OIL AND THE WAX. IT ALSO ALLOWS A HIGH VOLUME OF WORKLOAD TO BE PERFORMED ON THE TRACK.”
