tt start her own business
Growing up as a “Salamanca Market kid,” Britt Kronawitter has always understood how to showcase Tasmania to tourists. Working with her stepfather and other stallholders at the market were her first jobs and they put her in contact with many visitors to Tasmania. These early experiences sparked an interest in tourism which saw Britt gain a tourism degree in her twenties. When her two children came along, she opted for the stability of a career in retail but always remained interested in tourism. “A couple of years ago I was feeling a bit dissatisfied with my work and with myself so I decided to go back into tourism,” Britt said. With a dream to start her own business, she opted for the Certificate III in Tourism at TasTAFE as a refresher and hasn’t looked back. In mid-June Britt opened her own business, Take a Peek: Tasmanian Tours. The business offers guided day trips for small groups in a seven seater mini bus with tours to Port Arthur, Bruny Island, Hastings Caves and the Huon. Britt says she’s thrilled to be up and running and recently took her first tour. “It’s so exciting, I don’t know how I even slept last night (after doing her first tour). Britt says the Certificate III in Tourism, which she completed in 2017 and followed with a TasTAFE Certificate IV in New Small Business Management, have helped her a great deal in setting up the business. “Both courses were helpful. The marketing side of things was really handy and things like learning the reservation system have been invaluable for setting up the business. “The Tourism course was also fantastic in
terms of networking. All of the nibbles I’ve had so far have been through people I’ve met through TasTAFE. They’ve been really supportive and I feel like I can go to them for advice as well. I also learnt so much more about my own state through the course,” Britt said. She recognises that it will take time to grow the business and would one day like to involve her husband, a keen bushwalker, in offering tours for the more intrepid traveller. She sees plenty of opportunity with a growing tourism industry in Tasmania. “The tourism industry in Tasmania is growing really well – that’s one of the reasons I chose it. I think we really need to grow in accommodation and transport, particularly in the Northern suburbs of Hobart.” Britt is excited about the future of her business and what it means for her. “I’m not going to get bored in this job. I can always start a new tour or go somewhere different. There are so many possibilities.” For more information visit: http://www. takeapeektasmaniantours.com/ or check the Facebook or Instagram page.
