by Strong) and her pragmatic partner, Josh (Keegan-Michael Key,“Key &Peele”), are stuck there until they discover true love, whether it’s with each other or with one of the other residents of the town. The project was announced earlier this year, backwhen it was being called“Schmigadoon.” But a fewmore (big) names have since been added to the cast, including FredArmisen (“Port- landia”),Alan Cumming (“The
which has all the earmarks of a classic Lifetime or Hallmark movie: a small-town homecom- ing, a rekindled romance and an angel-assisted change of heart. Except this one isn’t airing on Lifetime or Hallmark.“Christmas on the Square” is set to premiere onNetflix onNov. 22—a date that has a special significance as it marks the one-year anniversary of the previous Netflix-Parton col- laboration, the anthology series “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings,” which earned an Emmy nomina- tion this year for Outstanding TelevisionMovie. In“Christmas on the Square,” Christine Baranski (“The Good Fight”) stars as Regina, a cold, rich, calculatingwomanwho returns to her hometown after her father’s death. She’s planning to evict everyone right before Christmas and sell the land to amall developer—exactly the kind of “bah humbug”power move that would only earn praise fromHenry F. Potter, the villain in “It’s aWonderful Life” (1946). Votes for women: This year marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted Americanwomen the right to vote, andwhenwomen across the United States cast their first ballots onNov. 2, 1920, it was the culmination of nearly a century of protests and lobbying—though the fight continued for Black women. Dig into the history of the women’s suffragemovement and you’ll find countless personal stories of thosewho joined the campaign. Some of these stories provide the foundation for a new anthology drama currently in development over at CW. The series is titled“TheWom- an’s Hour,”andwhile it’s based on the book“TheWoman’s Hour:The Great Fight toWin the Vote”by author/journalist Elaine Weiss, the actual script is report- edly in development. But what’s interesting about this one is the partnership behind the series: it’s being produced byWarner Bros.Television in partnership with Steven Spielberg’sAmblin Television and former first lady and secretary of state, Hillary Clinton.

of manyTV and filmproducers. Andwhen you’reworking on a brand new series, that kind of name recognitionwould likely make it much easier to attract top talent. Of course, it also helps if that comedy series has a solid premise and the hilarious Cecily Strong (“Saturday Night Live”) as its lead. The“SNL”veteran is reteaming withMichaels for an as-yet-un- titledmusical comedy onApple TV+.The eight-episode series will followa couple on a backpack- ing trip intended to reinvigorate their relationship. While hiking, they discover themagical town of Schmigadoon, where everyone acts as if they’re in a big studio musical from the 1940s.There’s also a bit of a“Groundhog Day”-style twist:Melissa (played
GoodWife”), Jane Krakowski (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) and Broadway powerhouse Kristin Chenoweth (“Pushing Daisies”). Alongside Strong and Key, fel- low“SNL”alumArmisenwill play the role of Reverend Layton, the town’smild-mannered religious leader, while Chenoweth plays hismeddlingwife,Mildred. Cummingwill star as the town’s mayor, and Krakowski’s character is determined tomarry the cold- hearted doctor, played by Jaime Camil (“Jane theVirgin”). Look for this one to drop in 2021.
