Senior Companion Volunteers Huge Hearts for Helping

Senior Companion volunteers are community members just like you, who join our program to help reduce loneliness and isolation among homebound and isolated older adults. Each volunteer has a story, but they share one thing in common – a huge heart for helping others.

Meet Charleszine Willis, one of our newest volunteers. She is 66 years strong and has a lifetime of experience as a caregiver helping seniors and people with disabilities. In her words, “Helping is just in my nature.” On January 24th, Charleszine lost her home and everything she owned, due to a fire. She learned about PCOA through a resource folder provided by the Red Cross and she heard about the Senior Companion Program when she called PCOA and was placed on hold. Perhaps, helping others wouldn’t be a priority for many people experiencing such a tragic life-changing event, but for those with the heart of a volunteer, it’s just in their nature! So, why did Charleszine join? For Charleszine, this was the opportunity for a new start, and she sees the Senior Companion Program as a chance to make

new friends, try new activities, and learn new things. She also shared that her house used to be the go-to place for her family, friends, and acquaintances to be fed, borrow money, or get a ride. She felt taken for granted and realized the help was not reciprocated when she needed it most. Being a Senior Companion volunteer offers her a safe space with healthy boundaries to do what is in her nature, helping others. Choose AmeriCorps Seniors. Your time and friendship can change someone’s life. Call (520) 305-3453 to join our team of incredible volunteers.
