WE LISTEN BECAUSE WE CARE
“People will forget what you say to them and what you do to them. But they will never forget how you made them feel.” This is a quote from Maya Angelou that we have hanging in our front office, and I think it captures the value our team shares at the office — ensuring you know that we care about you.
The skill of active listening has helped me not only professionally but also personally. When I am interacting with my wife and daughters, listening has helped our communication tremendously. It has strengthened my bond with my family, and I can tend to their needs more effectively.
One of the best ways my team and I convey that we value you is by listening. We appreciate your input, and we will always be a sounding board
for you to highlight your concerns, health issues, and other topics. I understand that going to the dentist can be a frightening experience, given that 50%–80% of adults in the U.S. have
“Although my team and I are very knowledgeable about oral health, it doesn’t matter if we don’t show that we care about you.”
I highly encourage you to incorporate active listening into your life whenever you can. While it may be challenging at first, with practice, you will be able to understand what others are conveying to you more easily. The best strategy I have is not to plan what to say next. I understand the action behind listening to what someone is saying and focusing on what you want to add. But by doing that, you could miss other valuable information or interrupt them in the middle of the conversation. Furthermore, show others you’re listening to them by providing physical and verbal cues. But most importantly, try not to multitask while speaking to others. We are all guilty of being on our phones, petting our dogs or cats, or working on another task while someone is talking. But it’s difficult for our brains to comprehend information coming from different avenues — our brains weren’t designed to do that! This month, give your undivided attention to others when engaging with them. You may be surprised by the amazing benefits it has to offer.
some degree of dental anxiety, according to the Journal of Dental Hygiene. Therefore, all of us at Bismarck Advanced Dental & Implants will go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable during your visit. Speaking about your oral health and fears can feel very vulnerable, so I want to ensure you feel heard when you bring up your concerns and conditions. Although my team and I are very knowledgeable about oral health, it doesn’t matter if we don’t show that we care about you. I can list dozens of facts and statistics, but what’s important is how you feel in the office. When you come in for your appointment, I want to hear about your experience, concerns, and what you want from the final product. Additionally, I will pay attention to your body language, your tone, and how you say certain words. I will read between the lines to provide you with the best service possible — I can gain an abundance of information simply by practicing active listening! However, the skill of active listening doesn’t come naturally — it’s something you must do every day. Thankfully, I am the oldest of four siblings. Throughout my life, I’ve had tons of time to learn how to listen, be patient, and provide assistance whenever my three younger sisters needed it. But that’s not all. The more experience I gained while working at Bismarck Advanced Dental & Implants, the more I learned how to incorporate active listening into my procedures.
Happy Listening Awareness Month, everyone!

WHAT DOES DENTAL AFTERCAR
5 Steps You Should Follow
Over the past few editions, we’ve discussed the benefits of dental implants, what services you can receive, and answered frequently asked questions. But we have yet to talk about the aftercare around dental implants. After installing your dental implants, following a few strategies, like the five listed here, is essential to ensure they remain in good shape until your mouth is healed. USE A SOFT-BRISTLED TOOTHBRUSH. You should brush your teeth carefully twice a day after installing dental implants. However, it’s important to use a soft-bristled toothbrush because it reduces the amount of wear to your teeth. It can also prevent scratching and other damage to your implants. After brushing, inspect your implants and teeth to spot damages early on. This will ensure that any additional repairs are done quickly. USE A WATER FLOSSER INSTEAD OF STRING FLOSS. If you don’t know what a water flosser is, it’s a tool that provides a stream of pulsating water to help dislodge harmful particles from your teeth, which will keep your teeth (and implants) cleaner and in better condition. WHY ARE MY TEETH SENSITIVE?
AVOID ABRASIVE INGREDIENTS. Pay attention to what ingredients are in your oral products to ensure your dental implants remain in good condition. When you choose your toothpaste, be sure it doesn’t contain baking soda and stain removal ingredients.
Sometimes, you may want
an ice-cold drink or treat to refresh and cool yourself. But then you feel a sharp pain in your mouth as soon as the cold substance hits your teeth. Or, you may want to eat or drink something to warm yourself up but experience the same tooth pain. The discomfort can be inconvenient and prevent you from enjoying your food! But why are your teeth sensitive, and how can you treat them? WHAT CAUSES TEETH TO BE SENSITIVE? You’re brushing your teeth too hard. While it may seem that brushing your teeth vigorously will clean them better, it will actually do the opposite. When you brush too hard or use a hard-bristled toothbrush, you can wear down your enamel — and enamel cannot be regrown. Without enamel, the dentin and nerves in your teeth are not protected, which can cause sensitivity. You may be over-whitening your teeth. If you use teeth whitening strips — whether you get them from your local store or your dentist — you can experience temporary or permanent teeth sensitivity. This is because the pores in your enamel open so the whitening treatment can reach the dentin. If you experience sensitivity after whitening, it should go away. But if you whiten your teeth frequently, it can cause prolonged sensitivity.
You may have additional reasons for tooth sensitivity. These include gum disease, cavities, tooth decay, broken or chipped teeth, teeth grinding, loose fillings, and eating or drinking acidic foods often. A dentist can help you identify the issue. HOW CAN YOU TREAT TOOTH SENSITIVITY? If your tooth sensitivity is mild, you can try several over-the-counter treatments that may help. These include desensitizing toothpaste, alcohol-free mouthwash, and soft-bristle toothbrushes. However, if your sensitivity remains after using over-the-counter treatments for a week, contact your dentist and schedule an appointment. Your dentist can perform several procedures like dental bonding, fluoride varnishes, and dentin sealers. Your dentist can also provide additional recommendations on how you can reduce your tooth sensitivity and other causes for your discomfort. So, call your dentist’s office today! Your teeth will thank you for it.

WHAT DOES INVISALIGN HELP WITH? There are a few main reasons why you should look into Invisalign.
• You have an overbite, underbite, or crossbite that makes it difficult for you to eat or even speak. • There are gaps in your teeth that can lead to teeth loss or other major issues. • You have crooked teeth. WHAT DOES THE PROCESS OF GETTING INVISALIGN LOOK LIKE? You may have other reasons to consider Invisalign other than the previously listed ones, so the first step is visiting your dentist and getting a consultation. After the initial visit, your Invisalign will be fitted to the shape of your teeth. Then, you may have regular check-ups to ensure your custom aligner is working properly. INVISALIGN VS. BRACES — WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Both Invisalign and braces will fix an overbite, underbite, crossbite, and gapped or crooked teeth. A question we receive a lot is if Invisalign hurts. While everyone’s pain tolerance is different, one thing is sure: Invisalign hurts less than braces. Invisalign doesn’t necessarily “hurt,” but they will be uncomfortable at first as you get used to them. WHY SHOULD YOU GET INVISALIGN? Although Invisalign will help you achieve a beautiful smile, it will also help your oral health. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about having food particles stuck in your teeth (like with braces). If you have a speech-related issue, Invisalign can correct your bite and make it easier for you to speak and pronounce certain words, which can boost your confidence. If you want to know more about Invisalign, please visit or call our office with any questions or concerns. We would love to help you in any way we can. Schedule your consultation today.

‘IRISH I KNEW THAT SOONER!’
MARCH 17 ISN’T ST. PATRICK’S BIRTHDAY. Many believe that we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on his birthday, but it’s actually the day he died in 461 A.D. THAT’S NOT HIS NAME. As mentioned earlier, St. Patrick is not his real name! When he became a bishop, Maewyn Succat changed his name to Patrick. HE DIDN’T BANISH SNAKES. Legend has it that St. Patrick banished all of the snakes from Ireland. In fact, even some portraits depict him doing so. However, fossil records show that snakes were never present in Ireland around his lifetime. CORNED BEEF AND CABBAGE ORIGINATED IN AMERICA. On March 17, everyone loads up on corned beef and cabbage in celebration, but did you know that in Ireland, they ate ham and cabbage, and the corned beef tradition actually began in America? In the 19th century, Irish Americans bought leftover corned beef from ships returning from China. THE FIRST ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE HAPPENED IN AMERICA. Many believe that St. Patrick’s Day was first celebrated in Ireland, but in 1737, the first St. Patrick’s Day parades actually took place in Boston and New York City. 6 Fun Facts About St. Patrick’s Day
Year after year, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with green shamrocks, leprechauns, pots of gold, and Lucky Charms, but did you know that St. Patrick was actually British? Even more surprising, St. Patrick isn’t even his real name!
Get ready to celebrate the luck of the Irish while impressing others with some fun St. Patrick’s Day trivia.
THE MAN’S BRITISH ROOTS RUN DEEP. St. Patrick isn’t Irish — he was born in Britain around the end of the fourth century. Legend has it that at 16 years old, he was kidnapped and sold into slavery by Irish raiders. After six years, he was able to escape back to Britain and returned to Ireland much later as a Christian missionary. Ireland named him the country’s patron saint after he passed away.
