propagating the democratic princi ples of America. World Literacy About half the world’s popula tion, some 1,300 million people, is literate and each year some 25 million more people learn to read. Three-quarters of the world’s books come from only 10 countries and 70 percent of the world’s transla tions are produced in only English, Russian, French and German. These are some of the facts underlined by Dr. Luther H. Evans, director-general of UNESCO, ad dressing the XLV Congress of the International Publishers Association in Florence, Italy. Dr. Evans told the Congress, which was attended by nearly 1,000 publishers from 17 countries, that, “UNESCO’s concern was for people everywhere to have full and free access to the printed word — a task needing the cooperation of gov ernments, the publishing industry and the public.” This is a tremendous challenge to the Christian church and since UNESCO and similar organizations show no concern for the distribution of the Bible and Christian litera ture, it is incumbent upon the church to meet this challenge. Wood From Noah's Ark Fernand Navarra, a Bordeaux manufacturer, has claimed that he has brought back f r om Mount Ararat in Armenia, a 5,000 year- old piece of wood which he believes may have been a part of the hull of Noah’s ark. Navarra, who plans to publish a book on his expeditions to the Old Testament land, said that he chopped the piece of wood in June, 1955 from remains of a 450-foot long rib from the ark buried under about two feet of ice. He said that the chief engineer of the Madrid Forestry Institute had analyzed the fragment and reported, “ One can suppose that its age is about 5,000 years.” When asked if he was convinced that his find came from Noah’s ark, Navarra replied, “ The Bible and history locate it there; it is possible that it may be something else. But in that case it is from another big construction which should not leave our contemporaries indifferent.”
