WAIT — MY KID IS AN ADULT? Happy 18th Birthday, Zach!

had to stay onboard for the rest of its route before the bus driver could drop him off. He hopped down the steps right outside our front door. Emilie and I weren’t happy, but Zach thought the private ride was the coolest thing in the world. Looking back, little moments like that reassure me Zach will definitely be okay in college. Sure, he’s forgetful (Once, we went to his middle school band concert and found one of his shoes in the lost and found. Just one shoe! How does that happen?), but he’s also a really social, active, independent kid. Some 8-year-olds would have had a meltdown on that bus, but he took missing his stop in stride. It’s hard to believe that our self- sufficient 8-year-old turns 18 on April 20. My oldest child is going to be an adult! I still can’t wrap my head around it, and Emilie is having an even harder time than I am. A few days ago, I walked in on her pulling up old family videos on her computer. Watching little Nathan and Zach run around made us a bit teary-eyed!

Patients like you told me for years that my kids would grow up too fast, and you guys were right. Fortunately, Emilie and I listened and made the most of our time together! We tried to spend as much time with our boys as possible. We took them on trips and included them in dozens of activities. I even took them golfing! They weren’t very good at first (sorry, guys), but I carted them along anyway because I enjoyed having them around.

“Once, we went to his middle school band concert and found one of his shoes in the lost and found. Just one shoe!”

About 10 years ago, Emilie and I were sitting on the front porch of our house, waiting for 8-year-old Zach to get off the bus. The big yellow school bus pulled up, its door swung open, and a couple of kids trickled out — but no Zach!

I figure one day, they’ll be better golfers than I am.

“No worries,” we told each other, “he’ll be out in just a second.”

I’m looking forward to celebrating Zach’s 18th birthday with him

But he wasn’t. And then the bus door slid shut. What the heck?

in a few weeks. We’ll probably embarrass him by

Emilie was on her feet in seconds. She raced down the street after the bus, waving her arms like crazy, but it didn’t stop or turn around. Panicked, we called a friend whose kid got off at the next bus stop. “Can you look for Zach?” we asked, “He didn’t get off the bus!” She promised to check, and a few minutes later, my phone rang. Sure enough, Zach was on the bus the whole time. He was just so busy talking that he missed his stop! He

getting a little misty and pulling out old photographs from when he and Nathan were little. Then, at the end of the summer, we’ll send him off to school. Hopefully, he does better at remembering to turn in his homework than he did getting off the bus! If you’re reading this, Zach, happy 18th birthday — I’m proud of you! –Mike Ulmer

FIND MORE ‘YOU’ TIME

Developing a Self-Care Routine

MAKE TIME FOR HOBBIES. Most people find themselves constantly juggling countless tasks and obligations. With so much to do, making time for your least favorite activities likely won’t happen; instead, do something you enjoy. After all, self-care is about you! Yoga, reading, journaling, jogging, and meditating are just a few ways to get in some “you time.” If you like it, do it! PLAN YOUR SELF-CARE TIME. Without adding self-care to your schedule, your healthy behaviors may get placed on the

Life isn’t easy — when juggling a career, family, children, social obligations, and housework, finding time for yourself can be difficult. Studies show that roughly 59% of individuals only make time for self-care after they’ve become stressed out. Here are some ways to develop a healthy routine that suits your busy life. BECOME INTENTIONAL. When developing a self-care ritual, it’s essential to identify your reasons behind taking better care of yourself and to pinpoint your needs. With a

clear vision and motive behind your efforts, developing healthy habits to nurture and incorporate into your everyday routine becomes easier. CREATE LARGE AND SMALL SELF- CARE OPTIONS. You don’t need to do the same self- care ritual all the time, but make it a point to do something for yourself every day. On busier days, you may only have a moment to take a few deep

back burner. Block off time for your favorite activities: Once it’s on your calendar, you’re more likely to work a routine into your day. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Complex rituals may create more stress or anxiety when you should be relaxing. Instead, keep it simple by focusing on relaxing, breathing, and recharging. Go

for a walk in the park, take a nap, get a massage, stretch, or take a few moments to do absolutely nothing. Simplicity is the key.

breaths and mentally reset, but on other days, you may have time for a relaxing bath, massage, workout, or pedicure.

Hands down, the best part of spring is enjoying tennis, golf, or pickleball under clear, blue skies. While we certainly encourage you to stay active and get your game on, we do want you to be aware of the risk of golfer’s and tennis elbow. These conditions are actually separate issues but with similar treatments. A primary (and painful) difference sets golfer’s and tennis elbow apart, which is where you’re hurting in the forearm and elbow. Golfer’s elbow will cause pain inside the forearm and elbow, while tennis elbow will create discomfort on the outside. Despite their names, sports aren’t always the sole culprits for these issues. Any activities or jobs that require repetitive wrist movement can be responsible for golfer’s and tennis elbow. Read on to find out whether you’re in danger of developing one of these conditions and how we can help if you do. WHO’S AT RISK? Some risk factors are associated with both golfer’s and tennis elbow. For example, people over 40 are more likely to develop these conditions. If you smoke or are GETTING A GRIP ON GOLFER’S AND TENNIS ELBOW DIFFERENT CONDITIONS, SAME TREATMENT

overweight, then there are higher chances of developing elbow problems. Research has also shown that men and women are equally likely to experience golfer’s or tennis elbow. Of course, those who play racquet sports and golf are more likely to have these elbow issues. Other specific occupations can also lead to injury. Carpentry, painting, cooking, typing, and car repair can also overuse the

wrist and lead to golfer’s and tennis elbow. TREATING GOLFER’S AND TENNIS ELBOW
