36 and Thriving A Young Entrepreneur’s Letters to His Kids

2025 MAR

A noted author once said that a great book should leave you with many experiences — enabling you to live several lives just by

things I strive for. He encompasses the picture of a successful business leader who also has a successful family life, and he is very charitable as well, giving back when and where he can. One of Pompliano’s tenets is “How you do anything is how you do everything.” Even the small things count. The person who is always on time is the same person who keeps promises, is trustworthy, and is dependable. As I’ve written in this newsletter in the past, it’s one thing to behave in a certain way because other people are watching, but it’s an entirely different thing to hold yourself accountable when you are alone, and no one is watching. Each of Pompliano’s chapters offers a nugget of wisdom, such as “Carve your ethics in stone, write your opinions in sand,” and “Have a bias for action.” Pompliano writes about how starting his first company gave him the skills to start a second one and then head growth teams at a major tech company. The moral of the story? “Today is practice for tomorrow.” He writes of the tenacity required to build a skyscraper, make a fortune, or simply lose weight or build muscle. The principle is, “The best things in life take time.” Another worthy piece of advice is to always finish what you start. Pompliano has helped hundreds of companies get off the ground, including Lyft, Coinbase, and Placer.ai, and he has been interviewed on various financial outlets, including CNBC and Fox News Money. Pompliano’s principles resonate with wisdom I’ve heard from other authors and speakers formerly in the military. Jocko Willink, a former Navy SEAL and author of “Extreme Ownership,” holds that if you lead a team and something goes wrong in a mission, it’s your fault because you didn’t prepare your people well enough. You don’t throw other people on the sword when you lead like that. You create a culture of responsibility, and people follow you wholeheartedly as a result. What emerges from Pompliano’s collection of letters is a similar picture of a highly energetic, responsible, worthwhile role model. “How to Live an Extraordinary Life” is an inviting read from someone who has led a cool life. As we approach Read Across America Day, I hope you can take the time to dive into a book you love and recommend it to others. It’s a great way to enrich and deepen your life!

reading. As Read Across America Day rolls around this month, I want to recommend a recent book that did that for me.

This is an easy read by an author who, at age 36, has

already accomplished more than most people do in a lifetime. In “How to Live An

Extraordinary Life,” Anthony Pompliano offers 65 brief letters he wrote to his children, with lessons on success in business and life. It is almost like a memoir to his kids. Pompliano was on the battlefield in Iraq by age 20 and has since found success as an entrepreneur, investor, and parent. I like the way Pompliano uses his letters to highlight what he finds important in life.

Many of us neglect our mental health because we’ve desensitized ourselves to stress, instead teaching ourselves to “white knuckle” through the day. However, if you knew a better way to manage your stress, you could loosen the reigns more, right? Well, when was the last time you spent some time outside? Whether it’s going on a hike, tending to your garden, or riding a bike, research reveals the positive effects on your mental health of spending time outdoors. Wood You Be-Leaf It?! GETTING OUTSIDE CAN HELP YOU FEEL BETTER

In a world of darkness, be workers of light.

IMPROVED OVERALL MOOD

For chiropractor Eric J. Harrison, founder of Chiro Heroes, it all started with one good idea. He says from that point on, “the heavens opened, and everything started flowing.”

Everyone occasionally falls into a “funk.” And while it’s normal to experience that mood at times, it shouldn’t be a constant feeling. A 2010 study revealed that exercising in nature for just

five minutes improved self- esteem and overall mood.

The idea for the nonprofit group was sparked in 2020 by one of Dr. Harrison’s two daughters, who was working with him in his practice, Harrison Chiropractic and Wellness, in Taylorsville, Utah. She suggested hosting a charity event. Dr. Harrison decided to open his clinic on a day he doesn’t normally see patients and donate the proceeds to an organization that fights human trafficking.

Experiencing nature often makes people feel grounded and more connected to the Earth, leading to feelings of happiness and a sense of purpose. A separate study revealed that participants who went on nature walks

“Our patients got behind the effort” so enthusiastically that he made the fundraiser an annual event, he says.

A fourth-generation chiropractor and president of the Utah Chiropractic Physicians Association at the time, Dr. Harrison worked with a group of other chiropractors and friends to found the new nonprofit. The group has raised more than $200,000 for organizations combating human trafficking, started a scholarship fund to help survivors, and arranged care for rescued survivors. Another Chiro Heroes group is forming in Virginia, and supporters have held several successful charity golf tournaments.

had increased positive

emotions after the walk.

POSITIVE BRAIN STIMULATION When you spend time outdoors, taking in the sunlight and fresh air, your body releases the feel-good hormone serotonin in return. Many antidepressant medications work by inhibiting reabsorption of this key neurotransmitter. Additionally, sunlight activates melatonin release, which helps regulate our internal clock. The more sunlight we get each day, the more our bodies know when it’s time to go to bed. ENHANCED FOCUS AND ATTENTION Whether at home or in the office, our brains can go a mile a minute, focusing on everything except the task at hand. While you’re supposed to be working on a PowerPoint presentation, your brain thinks about the new tire you need and the pile of dirty dishes in the sink. A 2020 study found that spending time in nature can calm the mind, allowing for enhanced focus. Further studies on outdoor play settings stated that children with ADHD were calmer after playing in green spaces than in other settings.

ALIGNING FOR JUSTICE How Chiro Heroes Battles Human Trafficking

Human trafficking victims often suffer great physical and emotional pain, and chiropractors are well-positioned to notice and provide help, Dr. Harrison says. One of the group’s major goals is to educate chiropractors across the country to recognize the signs of human trafficking. Dr. Harrison and another supporter, Joe Kryszak, founder of Stirling Professional CBD, Cary, North Carolina, have delivered nearly a dozen presentations to the International Chiropractors Association and other groups. Dr. Harrison asks that hosting organizations cover his travel expenses and donate to the cause. Also, webinars on the subject are available at IAmOnWatch.org . At least one victim has been identified and rescued by a chiropractor who heard a Chiro Heroes presentation. The group also identified female chiropractors who were willing to provide aftercare. The care provided by one volunteer, Utah chiropractor Kristina Stitcher, was described in a 2022 Psychology Today blog post under the headline, “What Trafficking Survivors Need Most: Psychotherapy and Chiropractic.” The victim was suffering from severe headaches and knee and back pain, and she was hunched over, arms crossed, and eyes turned downward. Dr. Stitcher diagnosed biomechanical problems in the pelvis, which wasn’t moving symmetrically but was frozen on one side, causing back spasms and inward rotation of her knees. Shocked by the young woman’s condition, Dr. Stitcher worked to restore her motion and neurological communication,

easing her pain and enabling her to return to normal activity. Dr. Stitcher also helped the young women secure mental health care.

While many people think of sex trafficking as a hidden activity, child-protection organizations say victims often move openly without being detected. Signs include an abrupt disconnection with family and friends, access to large amounts of cash or credit cards, fearful avoidance of speaking for themselves, frequent running away or homelessness, relinquishing their ID to an adult, close ties with an excessively controlling adult, frequent unexcused absences from school, or tattoos the child doesn’t want to discuss. Chiropractors can support Chiro Heroes by hosting fundraising days at their clinics or making monthly cash donations. Charity golf tournaments are planned for May 8 at Bull Run Golf Club in Virginia and June 11 at TalonsCove Golf Club in Utah. “The end goal,” says Dr. Harrison, “is to get chiropractors all over the world to help fight human trafficking. This will be my life’s passion,” he adds, “until I can’t do it anymore.”

Engage Your Kids With Fun Gardening Projects 4

How to Make Gardening a Family Adventure GREEN THUMBS IN TRAINING There’s nothing better than spending time with your kids outside, enjoying an entertaining, creative, and informative activity. But sometimes, these activities are hard to coordinate. Thankfully, gardening appeals to parents and kids from all walks of life. All you need is a dedicated area in your yard or patio and seeds, and you’re ready to get started. LET YOUR KIDS CHOOSE THE PLANTS. This is arguably the most crucial part of igniting your children’s interest in gardening. If you pick out the fruits, veggies, and flowers you want to grow and invite your kids to help plant, water, and pick, they may lose interest quickly. Instead, include them in the process from the get-go. Take them to the store and let them pick out seeds or plants. Encourage them to choose produce they already enjoy eating, making it even more fun for them! Just be sure their choices can grow in your area during the current season.

MAKE SPACE AND PLANT TOGETHER. After choosing your seeds, you must ensure your garden is ready to sustain life. Dedicate a section of your lawn or patio to your gardening efforts and start laying soil or filling your planters. Help your children transplant their seeds or young plants directly into the area. Now, put them in charge of caring for the plants by checking on and watering them. You may want to follow behind to ensure they aren’t over or under-watering. MAKE IT FUN AND INFORMATIVE! You can get your kids more involved by encouraging them to research their plants and track their growth. They can even look online to see how their plants should be developing. Soon enough, those fruits and vegetables will be ready to eat, and you should let your children pick anything ripe when possible. Seeing the fruits of their labor (literally) will make this experience even more enlightening and enjoyable for them.
