SUSTAINABILITY IN METALCASTING

Metalcasters play a key societal role in the sustainability of our natural resources.

UNCOMPROMISING DESIGN AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

ARCHITECTURAL CASTING WITHOUT LIMITS SINCE 1972

At Urban Accessories, our commitment to sustainability is as solid as the products we craft. Since 1972, we have not only shaped landscapes with our high-quality bespoke grating and site furnishings but have also molded our operations to uphold profound respect for our environment. As we stand at the forefront of the casting industry, our efforts are deeply rooted in a philosophy that harmonizes environmental stewardship with artistic and functional design. Our X-factor is rooted deeply in our commitment to American craftsmanship—100% of our production is based in the USA, with the highest percentage of recycled content available, sourcing materials as locally as possible. Our integrated manufacturing approach means every stage of production is handled in-house, providing us unparalleled flexibility to innovate and tailor our products to meet your unique needs. Since our inception in 1972, we've positioned ourselves as the foundry for designers, drawing inspiration from Louis Sullivan's principle that form follows function, particularly in urban design. In today's world, where the conservation of our planet's resources is more crucial than ever, our industry continues to be a key player in the environmental movement. Our commitment to sustainability permeates every aspect of our operations—from an office culture that emphasizes the importance of recycling paper, metals, and plastics, to shipping policies designed with the environment in mind. Our manufacturing processes have always prioritized the reuse of materials, ensuring our practices contribute to a sustainable future.

METALCASTING RECYCLES AT ALL PHASES OF THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Purchase of recycled-content materials and components as feedstock; Use and reuse of a variety of materials within the melting and molding processes; Produce recyclable products for customers; Supplies secondary markets with usable byproducts generated by metalcasting facilities. By choosing us, you're not just investing in unparalleled quality and customization; you're also supporting a company that places a high value on environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.

Recycled Content: Urban Accessories proudly utilizes 100% recycled materials in all cast gray iron and aluminum products. Our cast ductile iron products contain 52% recycled iron, and our fabricated steel products range from 88% to 100% recycled content. This initiative significantly reduces our demand on virgin materials and lowers the environmental impact associated with resource extraction. Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond just words. WE SOURCE 100% OF OUR IRON FROM RECYCLED CAR PARTS, SPECIFICALLY BRAKE ROTORS AND DRUMS. OUR ANNUAL PROCUREMENT IS 1.3 MILLION TONS. This innovative approach not only helps reduce waste but also transforms discarded materials into stunning architectural elements that enhance outdoor spaces. Our dedication to eco-friendly practices ensures that every piece we cast contributes to a greener, more sustainable world. Iron can be reused, re-purposed, re-made and recycled over and over again. An investment in this material is never wasted.

LOCAL SOURCING We prioritize local sourcing, with many suppliers located within 50 miles of our primary manufacturing facility in Tacoma, WA. This approach minimizes transportation emissions and supports our local economy. For example, we procure innovative materials like Richlite, which is made from recycled paper and sourced from just across the street. Richlite is not only durable and versatile but also sustainable, being water-resistant, sanitary, heat and fire-resistant, and extraordinarily dense. It even boasts responsible manufacturing practices, FSC® certification, and GREENGUARD accreditation. Additionally, our VG fir is

sourced from approximately 200 miles away, and thermally modified ash comes from within 500 miles, ensuring that our wood is domestically sourced and processed.

ZERO VOC EMISSIONS

Effective January 2024, all of our powder coat finishes are brought in-house emitting zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs), enhancing the environmental quality and reducing air pollution.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

We are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint through energy- efficient manufacturing practices. Our facilities are equipped with advanced technologies designed to minimize energy consumption and maximize operational efficiency.

Specific strategies include:

Smart Manufacturing Systems: Utilizing automated and optimized production processes to ensure minimal energy use. Energy Recovery Systems: Implementing systems that capture and reuse energy generated during production. High-Efficiency Equipment: Investing in machinery and equipment that consume less power while maintaining high performance. Renewable Energy Sources: Integrating solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources to power our operations.

Waste reduction is a significant part of our sustainability efforts. One of the byproducts of our manufacturing process, spent sand, contributes significantly to the largest volume and weight of materials beneficially used. By reusing and recycling spent sand, we reduce waste and promote resource conservation.

Our initiatives include:

Material Recycling: Converting spent sand and other byproducts into reusable materials. Efficient Material Use: Optimizing the use of raw materials to minimize waste. Eco-Friendly Packaging: Using sustainable packaging materials and practices.

WASTE REDUCTION AND RESOURCE CONSERVATION

DURABILITY: A CORNERSTONE OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN In the context of sustainable landscape architecture,

durability plays a pivotal role in minimizing environmental impact and ensuring the longevity of urban amenities. Durable materials reduce the need for frequent replacements, thus conserving resources and reducing waste. Urban Accessories’ commitment to using durable materials like cast iron, aluminum, bronze, and nickel bronze exemplifies our dedication to sustainability through long-lasting, high-quality products backed with a 25-year structural warranty.

Key Points on Durability: Inherently Recyclable Materials:

Iron, aluminum, bronze, and nickel bronze are infinitely recyclable metals whose original properties do not degrade with each repurpose. This ensures that our products can be recycled at the end of their lifecycle, minimizing landfill waste and reducing the need for new raw materials.

Corrosion Resistance: Our non-ferrous metals, such as aluminum and bronze, do not rust and are highly resistant to corrosion. This is particularly beneficial in coastal or treated water environments where durability against the elements is critical. Long Lifespan: Products made from these materials are designed to last for decades. For instance, our cast iron products undergo a natural patina process that protects the metal, extending its usability and aesthetic appeal over time. Maintenance and Preservation: While these materials are highly durable, we also provide guidance on maintenance practices to preserve their appearance and functionality. For example, applying powder coatings to iron can enhance its durability and prevent rust, while maintaining aluminum involves simple cleaning techniques to prevent oxidation. Economic and Environmental Benefits: Durable products not only reduce the frequency of replacements, saving costs for municipalities and clients but also contribute to lower carbon emissions associated with manufacturing and transportation. Compliance with Standards: Our products meet stringent industry standards for durability and performance, ensuring that they not only enhance urban environments but also comply with safety and accessibility regulations, such as ADA compliance. Durability is a key aspect of our sustainability strategy at Urban Accessories. By focusing on the longevity and recyclability of our products, we contribute to creating resilient, sustainable urban spaces that are built to withstand the test of time and environmental challenges. This commitment to durability ensures that our products not only meet but exceed the expectations for sustainable design in landscape architecture.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We believe in engaging with our community to foster a culture of sustainability.

Our efforts include:

Educational Programs: Hosting workshops and seminars to educate the community about sustainable practices. Partnerships: Collaborating with local organizations and stakeholders to promote environmental stewardship. Volunteer Programs: Encouraging our employees to participate in community clean-up and conservation projects.

FUTURE GOALS

Renewable Energy: We aim to incorporate renewable energy sources into our manufacturing processes, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and lowering our greenhouse gas emissions. Product Lifecycle Management: Developing new ways to extend the life of our products further and exploring opportunities for end-of-life recycling. For example, organizing a recycling program with scrap yards across the country. Community Engagement: Expanding our efforts to engage with local communities to enhance public spaces sustainably.

Urban Accessories is committed to leading by example in the casting industry, proving that operational excellence and environmental stewardship can enhance each other. As we continue to innovate and expand, our core values of sustainability, quality, and community engagement guide our journey towards a more sustainable future.
