“It is a wonderful experience [guiding patrons] through the vineyard to explain our farming practices and having that grounding feeling of tasting the wines from those exact vineyards.” —Taylor Serres Murnig, company officer

T he cabernet sauvignon produced by Serres Ranch Wine, a small vineyard and winery on the north end of the town of Sonoma, has won Best Cabernet Sauvignon for the Best of the North Bay 2024 readers’ poll. Taylor Serres Murnig, Serres Ranch Wine company officer, shared that her team is very honored to be receiving the recognition—this win marks their first in the NorthBay biz competition. “Our estate grown cabernet sauvignon is very elegant, with all of the right components to make a varietal-specific cabernet with that extra edge of adventure as it travels across your palate,” says Serres Murnig.

She is a member of the fifth generation of Serres family members who have owned the 200-acre Sonoma Valley property since 1924 and who have farmed the land for the past century. About 130 acres are planted in vines, with all the wines made from the grapes grown on the property. Described as a small operation by Serres Murnig, the farming side only has 10 to 14 employees, depending on the time of year. Serres Ranch was established in 1924 by John “Toots” Pierre Serres—Serres Murnig’s great-grandfather. Eventually the wine brand was established in 2018 by the fifth generation of the Serres family— Taylor Serres Murnig along with her brothers John and Buck Serres. Serres Ranch Wine produces five different wines. “All estate grown from our grapes: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, Bordeaux blend, Aleatico rosé and “bleusé”—blueberry and grape sparkling rosé,” says Serres Murnig. The winery offers private, by-appointment-only ranch tours for guests to come out and taste the wines and see all the ranch has to offer.

“It is a wonderful experience [guiding patrons] through the vineyard to explain our farming practices and having that grounding feeling of tasting the wines from those exact vineyards,” Serres Murnig adds. The past two wet winters have been challenging for Serres Ranch, but Taylor Serres Murnig and her team take it in stride. “The wet winters have been difficult, but also have given us the much-needed rain to fill the soil profiles,” Serres Murnig continues. “The overall mild weather has allowed for a longer growing season that has created new flavor profiles in the grapes and wine…As farmers, we are very nimble and learn to adjust quickly to different weather that Mother Nature throws our way.”
