“Winning this award is not only a validation of past accomplishments, but also an inspiration to continue striving for excellence in the future.” —Lori Harkey, vice president
By Jessie De La O
W hile driving south on Highway 101 in Windsor, you can’t help but notice a large blue and black H sitting atop a building on your right. That H stands for Harkey Construction and, since 1990, Jeff Harkey and his wife Lori—respectively president and vice president—have established a name for themselves within the community, as well as in other locations throughout Sonoma, Napa and Marin counties. Originally, Jeff and his brother had started Harkey Brothers Construction, but during the recession of 1990, his brother moved to Washington state and Jeff chose to remain in the North Bay. This is when he and Lori decided to form their owner partnership known as Harkey Construction. Depending on the time of year and the amount of work there is, Harkey Construction staffs about 20 to 30 employees—some of whom have been with the company for more than a decade. Jeff says the company follows a variety of principles, with integrity being one of the most important because it helps build a strong relationship with clients and with other companies they conduct business with. “Integrity is at the core of everything we do. We do what we say we are going to do,” says Jeff. “We prioritize honesty, transparency and ethical conduct in all aspects of our work, from interactions with clients, subcontractors and suppliers to the execution of the construction project.” Adds Jeff: “Our commitment to integrity builds trust and fosters strong relationships within our team, our vendors and with our clients.” What sets Harkey Construction apart from its closest competition is the dedication to craft. Jeff says although other construction companies may rely heavily on subcontractors or outsourcing many aspects of the construction process, Harkey is composed of builders by trade—meaning they perform all of the rough and finished carpentry work with their own resources in-house, as well as manage the subcontractors and vendors for the rest of its projects. By doing the work themselves, it allows Harkey to maintain the highest standards of quality and excellence in every project, and by having skilled carpenters on the team it ensures every aspect of the construction process is executed with the company’s goals and attention to detail. “This hands-on approach allows us to have greater control over the quality of workmanship, the timelines and overall project outcomes,”
President Jeff and Vice President Lori Harkey are the husband-and-wife duo that keep Harkey Construction going.
says Jeff. “It also enables us to provide a more personalized and seamless experience for our clients. They can trust that the same skilled craftsmen who are responsible for the initial framing and structural work will also be involved in the finishing touches and detailing.” Having received runners-up Gold Medal awards in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018 NorthBay biz Best of the North Bay readers’ polls, you can say that Harkey Construction isn’t a stranger to winning. However, this year it has been awarded the highest honor: first place for Best Builder/Contractor. Lori attributes the company’s success to its commitment to excellence, integrity, client satisfaction, as well as its longstanding presence and reputation in the community. “Winning this award is not only a validation of past accomplishments, but also an inspiration to continue striving for excellence in the future,” says Lori. “We’re truly grateful to everyone who voted for Harkey Construction and showed their support. We’re extremely thankful to our employees for their talent and dedication to Harkey Construction and their career in the trades. Without them we would not be who we are today,” says Jeff. v
