It’s worked well with the Ride to Work scheme, too, so the model is there. I believe we need something like this to help us really shift the dial, so we’re not simply incremental in our progress, which is what I believe we are at the moment. And of course, given our sector’s contribution to preventative mental and physical health, health and wellbeing is a big opportunity. That includes wellbeing in the workplace, where government is looking to direct funds to address the significant growth of absenteeism and presenteeism. However, for our sector to thrive in this role, we need government to move from statements and strategy to policy and funding across preventative health services. Social value metrics that prove our health impact and contribution will be key to our being recognised as part of

the national health agenda, but we also need to look very seriously at our messaging and imagery. There is a market for aspirational images, but a far larger percentage of the population will be alienated by them. Our whole sector has to start focusing on how you feel and how your body functions as a result of being active, not just how you look. The pace at which we’re moving on this is glacial. A final point on health and wellbeing: we really need a bank of great examples we can learn from. At the moment, there’s huge enthusiasm from both sides – PCTs and national health departments, and teams at leisure facilities – but not enough evidence that guides willing parties on best practice and joining the dots, or signposting of proven routes to successful collaboration. With best practice examples across health and wellbeing partnerships, we can all replicate faster and stimulate forward-looking activity that will benefit everyone.
