■ YMCA and High Life Highland have the lowest average number of members per gym (<1,000). ■ Freedom Leisure charges the highest average monthly membership fee: it is the only operator to charge on average over £40 a month, although Parkwood Leisure comes next at just under £40 a month. ■ High Life Highland charges the lowest average membership fee, at around £25 a month. ■ Compared to 2023, average monthly fees are +5.3% at GLL; +9.3% at SLM/Everyone Active; and +4.3% at Freedom Leisure.

■ SLM (Everyone Active) has the largest fitness membership base in the public sector, with over 450,000 members. It also has the highest average number of members per gym (around 2,600). ■ GLL – the UK’s #1 public sector operator by number of gyms – has the second largest fitness membership base, with around 320,000 fitness members across 195 gyms. ■ Places Leisure has the third largest member base, with around 150,000 members. ■ High Life Highland and Halo Leisure each have fewer than 25,000 fitness members.
