■ Low-cost operator The Gym Group remains in second place with 234 clubs, having added net four clubs since last year’s report. It added 23 clubs in the previous year. For a summary of The Gym Group’s performance and projections, see page 88. ■ Mid-market franchise operator Anytime Fitness completes the top three. It has 178 clubs, up from 177 in 2023. See page 79 for an interview with UK chair Andy Thompson. ■ These three operators account for 17.5% of all private sector clubs in the UK. ■ The top 10 operators account for 30% of all UK private sector clubs; the top 30 account for 37%. ■ Low-cost operator JD Gyms, mid-market operator Snap Fitness and hotel-based Spindles are the only other chains in the top 30 to have added five or more clubs since 2023. They have added 10, five and five respectively. ■ Mid-market operators Fitness First (see interview, page 64), énergie Fitness and Sports Direct Fitness are the only chains in the top 30 to have five or more fewer clubs than in 2023: -11, -9 and -6 clubs respectively. ■ The top 30 operators account for 71% of private club members (5.2 million members) and 72% (£3.2bn) of private sector value. This is the first time they have passed the 5 million member and £3bn market value milestones.
