Market shares: Top 10 operators
■ PureGym (see page 73), the UK’s largest fitness operator, has added 34 clubs since 2023 – the biggest growth of any operator. ■ JD Gyms (+10 clubs), Snap Fitness (+5), The Gym Group (+4 – see page 88), Anytime Fitness (+1 – see page 79) and David Lloyd (+1) are the only other top 10 operators to operate more gyms in 2024 than in 2023. ■ The top 10 operators are the same as in 2023, and there has been no change in ranking. ■ énergie Fitness, Sports Direct Fitness, Nuffield Fitness & Wellbeing and Bannatyne have fewer clubs than in 2023 (-9, -6, -2 and -1 respectively).
■ The top 10 operators account for 30% of all private clubs, but over 60% of total private sector membership and almost 60% of private sector market value. ■ In the last 12 months, the top 10 operators have increased their combined club count by 37 clubs (+2.8%). ■ Combined member numbers for the top 10 operators are up by almost 250,000, from 4.31 million in 2023 to 4.56 million in 2024. ■ The combined market value of the top 10 operators is up by over £250m, from £2.33bn in 2023 to £2.58bn in 2024. ■ Three low-cost operators feature in the top 10: PureGym, The Gym Group and JD Gyms. ■ Three franchise operators feature in the top 10: Anytime Fitness, énergie Fitness and Snap Fitness. ■ Between them, the top 10 operators have opened 65 new-build clubs since our 2023 report, while seven clubs have been rebranded following acquisition.
