■ PureGym, the UK’s #1 operator by number of clubs, also remains the leading operator by number of members, with over 1.5 million members across its UK estate (see page 73). ■ The Gym Group has the second largest membership base (around 900,000), followed by David Lloyd with almost 500,000. énergie Fitness is the only operator in the top 10 to have fewer than 100,000 members. ■ JD Gyms and The Gym Group charge under £25 a month on average. PureGym charges on average just over £25, but the majority of its clubs still cost under £25 a month.
■ David Lloyd has the highest average monthly membership fee (over £150), followed by Nuffield (over £85). ■ JD Gyms has the highest average number of members per club (over 5,000), while the three franchise operators have the lowest; Anytime Fitness, énergie Fitness and Snap Fitness all have fewer than 1,500 members per club, on average. ■ Of note across the top three operators, PureGym’s average fee is +4.5% compared to 2023; The Gym Group is +9.3%, with plans to continue to focus on yield in 2024 (see page 88); and Anytime Fitness is +4.7%.

UK club numbers rose an impressive 11 per cent year- on-year, reaching 370 corporate-owned gyms at the end of 2023 – up from 333 at the end of 2022. This number increased further in Q1 2024, with the UK estate reaching 380 gyms at the end of March 2024.
PureGym’s UK estate had a strong 2023, reporting full-year revenues of £366m (+19 per cent vs 2022) and adjusted EBITDA of £110m (+39 per cent vs 2022). The adjusted EBITDA margin was also up, from 26 per cent in 2022 to 30 per cent in 2023. This continued and accelerating growth in EBITDA was “underpinned by membership, revenue and ARPM progression” as well as “good cost control
