MULTI-CLUB OPERATORS ■ The multi-club sector has seen a 2.6% increase in the total number of clubs, up from 2,282 in 2023 to 2,342 in 2024. This is an all-time high. ■ It has also seen a 5.6% growth in the number of members, from 5.6 million in 2023 to 5.92 million in 2024. ■ Market value has performed even more strongly, rising 11.4% – from £3.3bn in 2023 to £3.7bn in 2024. ■ 8.8% of the UK population are now members of a private multi-club operation (compared to 8.2% in 2023).
INDEPENDENTS ■ The independent sector has seen a 0.3% decrease in the number of clubs, down from 2,178 in 2023 to 2,171 in 2024. ■ However, there has been a 2.9% increase in member numbers, from 1.38 million in 2023 to 1.42 million in 2024. ■ Growth in market value has been even more significant, rising +8.8% – from £732m in 2023 to £796m in 2024. ■ 2.1% of the UK population are now members of a private independent gym (compared to 2% in 2023).
