What I did: Each week I focused on a different line of business such as property, auto, inland marine, workers’ compensation, crime, umbrella, etc. In addition to learning each of these lines of business, I spent a decent amount of time desk shadowing with my mentor. We primarily focused on the auto dealer markets. I was able to observe the processes of submissions and renewals as well as MURY’s. Furthermore, I assisted the underwriters in getting their MURY’s ready by completing their property grades. I also attended weekly squad calls where we discussed new quotes, upcoming renewals, and safety recommendations with our nimble teams. What I liked: Over the course of my internship, I truly enjoyed when I desk shadowed with my mentor. It was beneficial to see the thought process of the underwriter as they determine if certain risks are within Sentry’s appetite. Desk shadowing gave me the opportunity to see the process of what to look for when quoting new submissions, how to push rate on renewals and just how to evaluate risk when looking at accounts with different exposures. Although there is a specific process to underwriting, I found that as an underwriter you have the opportunity to input your own judgment based on your own analysis of an account as well.
Future Dream Job: As of right now, I am still trying to figure out my dream career.
