SBE Internship Expo Program Summer 2022

HARRISON STEWART ’24

MAJOR Business Administration HOMETOWN Rockford, Ill. ORGANIZATION Delaware North Detroit, Mich. TITLE Concessions Intern

What I did: In this internship, I did multiple different positions and rotated around different departments. I spent some time with the HR department, helping out with organizing and going over reports sent to HR. I spent some time with the warehouse. On days where there were events, warehouse would make sure everything is stocked for the next event. We would take up product to the several different concessions stands and portable stands and stock them. On game days, I spent most of my time as a supervisor. A supervisor has a designated area in the ballpark, and they make sure everything is running smooth in the concessions stands. Supervisors will call in orders to the warehouse if a stand was running out of product. They will also make sure associates are doing their job, customers are satisfied, and can help out wherever needed. On non-game days, I spent most of my time recounting product in several stands and working on a few projects. One project was tracking spoilage throughout all of our events. By tracking spoilage, we can see what stands are wasting the most product and figure out better methods for them so that they aren’t wasting as much product. Another project was keeping track of what’s called “units per thousand.” With this, we are tracking on average how many people per a thousand people are buying a certain product. For example, we are seeing on average how many people are buying large beers per one thousand attendees. Another project we will do toward the end of the internship will be working with a construction company on figuring out how to renovate a certain part of the ballpark to help us make more money. This certain part of the park isn’t as efficient as it should be, so we are tasked to make renovation ideas to help improve it. We will then present this to our managers. What I liked: There are two main things that I liked about this internship. The first one is I got to be in the professional sports world and environment. I have been a major sports fan my whole life and it is so cool that I got to go to an MLB stadium every day to work. I was near and around the players. I was all around the ballpark and got to see the behind the scenes of everything. The second main thing I really liked was that every day was different. I didn’t have to go into work every day knowing I was going to do the same thing over and over. Every morning I got to look forward to something new and different that day compared to the day before. Future Dream Job: As of now, my dream job is to work for an NFL team. I’m not exactly sure what role, but I would love working my way up on the business side of things.
