What is a ?f unnel account ?? A funnel account (somet imes referred to as an interstate funnel account ) is a method used to launder money that exploits branch networks of f inancial inst itut ions. It involves illegal funds deposited into an account at one geographic locat ion that gives criminals immediate access to the money via withdrawals in a dif ferent geographic locat ion. The illicit funds are then immediately available for withdrawal by the criminal organizat ion in the state in which the account was opened. Types of Criminal Ent erprises Using Funnel Account s Alien smuggling organizat ions (ASOs), Drug t raf f icking organizat ions (DTOs), and human t raf f icking organizat ions are just some of the types of criminal enterprises that of ten use funnel accounts to launder illicit proceeds derived f rom their crimes.
